Are high end coins going back to Dealers for sale to the public, rather than to the auction houses?

Recently, 2 national dealers have announced that million dollar(plus) collections are being offered for sale, and the coins in the collections are in high demand(early bust, MS type, etc).

And the auction houses that normally get these " premium" sets are presenting fewer than they did a year ago.( Some exceptions- Duckor's $10 Indians, NY Connousoir early type)

Any apparent reason for the increase in using the dealer to distribute these great coins?

Is the delay in completing the deal(with the auction companies) enough reason to forsake them?

As long as the coins are priced reasonably(and the prices are going to be higher with a bull market), does it make sense to return to the dealers for a better and faster return of the collector's dollar?

Once the coins that are being offered are described, we will have a better feel for why the venue for selling may be swinging towards the dealer community.

I can say I just sold a very high end eagle to a large dealer to help on a down payment for a lower end Half Eagle. image.

Sometimes it is nice not to have to deal with the hassle of Auctions and subtracting the long wait for an unkown price is nice also.

Also if you have an idea of what your coin is worth and the dealer comes close it is worth giving up a couple of dollars especially knowing all of the auction fees you will have to fork over.

Anyhow this may be a little one sided but in the end the only time I will use a major auction is if the coins I am selling bring in moon money on a regular basis. If I can go through a dealer who will at least match or come reasonably close to recent auction pricing and build a relationship; the dealer will win the sale everytime.

Would that be for the 1929 $5 Indian to complete your set?image

  • Very cool. That's a great set you have there. Congratulations on a great accomplishment (assuming all goes to plan with your deal)!
