What's up with dealers that advertise coin prices as P.O.R. ?

Why are some dealers afraid to list their coin prices ? Are they embarrassed by the asking price or maybe they just want to hear their phone ringing !

If you have to ask "how much," you can't afford it.

The stupid market is such that prices are moving so fast, they don't want "to give something away."

When you advertise in Coin World and other places you have to submit your copy weeks in advance. By there yesterday's "you're crazy" price is today's bargain.

It is also a way to build a customer base. When I bought my first 1990 no S it was a POR. After they took my name and # they called me back when the guy "came back in the office". Thus you build a database of people that can spend X, Y or Z on a coin.

"We" do not do lay-away. If we cannot comfortably afford it, we pass. image

POR = The coin is so overpriced that they are too embarissed to publish it.

many people complain about cancelled eBay auctions (which last a maximum of 10 days)

you did not say where you saw the P.O.R., but a magazine wants ad copy 6-8 weeks before publication, chances are good the item they had then is not available/already sold but they have something similar or can get one
  • Try CoinWorld which is a weekly publication, I wouldn't think they
have a 6-8 week lead time, but-- if so, why publish any coin prices if things are so volatile on a weekly basis. I don't think so !

POR is a very poor way to advertise, I always pass, if someone wants me to buy put a price in the ad.

What is really annoying is when they have POR on the website, how hard is it to change the price if the market changes.
  • northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sometimes it implies that the seller does not actually have the coin ready to sell. I see some sellers advertise POR when the coin is still out for grading and the price will depend on how it comes back.

They want to deal only with serious buyers. There are times when you list a price on a coin then have somebody out of the blue call you up and "counteroffer". You accept their offer then they tell you that they were only considering buying that coin. Typically only people who are serious about buying the coin will call up the dealer and ask for a price.

They would like you to call so they can find collectors that have the money to spend on high ticket items. How do you think Laura can afford to pay for a $4,000,000.00 nickel, it is not from selling Generics. image

everything is for sale , POR is a way of saying:
It's for sale, do you realllllllllllllllly want it ? Call me !

    POR=Probably Over Retail.

Almost every instance it causes me to ignore the coin in question.
