Daughter decided on Peace Dollars....

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,160 ✭✭✭✭✭
...I guess it could have been worse. I had sat her down with an older copy of the Redbook and she looked at the pictures. When we got to the the store today she had it in her head that she only wanted to look at "dollars". I guess she liked the crown on Miss Liberty depicted on the Peace Dollar series...soooooo.... She looked in the bulk bin and picked out an OK looking 1923 Peace (probably XF) and a 1921D Morgan (XF-AU). Here we go.............

Nothing wrong with that. It's nice when kids express interest in their folks' hobbies.

So for you Peace Dollar collectors out there...I noticed when looking through the boxed coins in 2x2 holders (a bit nicer condition than the "bulk bin") that the reverses seams to suffer from weak strikes...am I imagining this?

  • Leo and all,

Peace Dollars most always suffer from weak reverses as you have noticed. But when one finds a particularly strong strike it's like finding a true gem. Actually, it really is.

Of my collections I can honestly say that of all my coins that the Peace Dollars have been one of the most tough to find in a condition and strike that truly stand out.

When I saw this thread I got a smile on my face as I know what a true joy it was to put together my collection of this series. I can honestly say that it was one of the most challenging collections I have ever assembled.

My best of luck to your daughter and I hope she finds as much as I have found with the series.

You say that like it's a bad thing. image

I have been having a great time with my set. It has been a real learning experience. And, yes they do suffer from weak strikes. Just hold out until you find the right one and you will be much happier.

Excellent choice...fairly inexpensive, easy to find in good grades, excellent design, big and silvery.

Weak strikes are just half the problem. The design is not as crisp as it was on Morgan dollars, so if you compare with them, Peace dollars will look poorly struck. Conversely, if you look at a poorly struck Morgan dollar, it will look sharper than a well struck Peace dollar at first glance for the same reason. Die erosion also made initially mushy design elements worse. It can be hard to find "IN GOD WE TRVST" among the flow lines of many Peace dollars if you use any magnification while looking at them. The designs were strengthened a little n 1934.
