Ok- here is the latest in my TPG stories.

This time we are doing crossovers. I submitted 5 seated dimes in PROBLEM FREE ANACS holders.

1839 AU58
1838 O VF20
1869 AU55
1884 S AU50
1887 S MS62

NGC Opinion

1839 AU58 / ART TONED - NO crossover
1838 O VF20 / VF20
1869 AU55 / AU55
1884 S AU50 / ENVIRN. DAMAGE NO crossover (must have the same ED in the coin they BB'd that PCGS slabbed)
1887 S MS62 / CLEANED NO crossover

So basically ANACS who I think grades fairly tough graded these 5 coins, all problem free and NGC found fault in 3 of the 5.

which begs the question: WHY? as in why submit them, why spend the money on shipping, insurance and fees, why wait the time, only to be unhappy with the results? image

if you were "rolling the dice" then it was an average or below average roll. Try again? image

Trying to build a registry but loosing interest rapidly. You would think the point of having them is to motivate people to submit coins for grading. If they won't grade them you can keep sending them in or buy new ones.

I find that 75% off all coins are coming back upgraded and I am not buy ugly coins graded 5 years ago in "loose days" to replace hand picked ones. There is nothing wrong with these coins. NGC is too tough today but that won't change the 1000's of cleaned and overgraded coins already out there.

My only comment is that with crossovers the tpg doesn't get the opportunity to see the coin raw, which, in the case of questionable toning and the like, could be the deciding factor for them in not feeling confident in giving a grade.

would love to see a picture of the 1839 ART TONED

I have seen so many NGC that I scratch my head and say that must be AT
  • I am VERY INTERESTED in a description of "Art Toned", and pictures, if someone has had this comment attributed to their coin. Thank You. Respectfully, John Curlis

Lately I have done much better cracking them out first.....even got a few nice upgrades, but the risk can sometimes be greater.

NGC and PCGS are both nervous about letting AT coins slide into their holders I guess. Too bad a lot of nice, legit coins get lumped in with the 'bad' ones.

NGC Body Bags are silly sometimes. What they baody bag frequently make it in holders at PCGS and ANACS. Why? I really don't know. Then you see some coins in NGC holders. Obviously cleaned (harshly), absolutely easy to spot AT etc. I used to think it was who was submitting. Now I just think it's a case of bad coffee some morning.

I've had net graded ANACS coins slabbed by NGC without any trouble so I guess it works in both directions.

I think they're all being really tight right now, and there are enough impressive AT jobs out there that it seems like almost everything with color is being bagged as QT.

Which is a shame, because all that will do is encourage more dipping.

I had one coin that was a VAM EDS MS DMPL $1. I submitted it for crossover several times, each time getting a different rejection reason -- LDS not EDS, not DMPL, circulated rub, ... all wrong on their part and inconsistent with each other. Consistency is quite important to the credibility of a TPG service.
