Humbert gold

Saw an enchanting, intoxicating, eat-the-whole-thing photo of a Humbert $50 octagonal piece in the Hertiage 2006 Denver auction announcement. Since the photo is up front, I figure they are out of reach of us regular guys but I can't say as I've even seen one offered before. Are they difficult to find? Where do you go to see one? Do they have little ones for regular guys?

Here is a link for anyone interested in a quick q/a infothingy.

I believe these are addressed in the Kagin book. Do you have that book? It is really good.

  • They have those listed in the Red Book. There are smoe smaller denoms, they are round, however. Still, the eagle is nice on them, IMO.
  • It's not difficult to find a $50 Slug. they are routinely offered in auction and specialists like Don Kagin and other "major" dealers carry them from time to time. Problem is , no matter how low the grade - there are very expensive. More so these days as pioneer gold has soared in the past year or so.

Wow, I thought these might be too esoteric for the general discussion, but good stuff! Thanks for the link John and the ref. Longacre, for Kagin's book. I'll check my redbook when I get home.

By far the $50 appears to be the flagship of the series but I could be Jonesin' pretty bad for one of those $10's if I don't have to sell my house to get to it. That assay stamp on the geometric design is pretty stunning. The auction should be up in the next few weeks on the Heritage site so it won't be too hard to see what folks are trying to get for these things. Thanks again for all the excellent info.

    Coin On!
  • Check Heritage's Auction Archives for the Humbert pieces and Assay office 10s and 20s. The 1853 Assay $20 K-18 is the commonest and most affordable. The reverse design is called engine turning.

These are "When I win the lotto" coins. They will go well with the 15 S panpac oct.
