Went a little crazy on the Bay tonight...

Wanted some colorful coins... and got them. One got away, but you can't win them all... (although I just *hate* being the underbidder image)

1. Seychelles 10 Rupees, 1974. ICG MS68. Icky modern stuff, but I like the peripheral toning.

image

2. Germany 5 Marks, 1973 J. ICG MS68. Ditto on the modern, but the combination of the universe design and the toning I dig.

image

3. Denmark 10 Kroner, 1968. ANACS MS68. No color, just condition. ANACS is so [CENSORED] conservative on Darkside material, that you rarely ever see them giving out a 67 or higher.

image

4. Brazil 2000 Reis, 1924. NGC MS66. I like the early 20th-century Brazilian pieces, even if they are fairly inexpensive...

image

5. Austria 10 Heller, 1916. ICG MS67. Common coin, but dig those surfaces!

image

6. Guernsey 1 Double, 1902 H. NGC MS66RB. Nice little colorfol piece for effectively the cost of the slab.

image

7. Austria 1 Heller, 1901. NGC MS66BN. Toned copper, BAYBEE! Stunning...

image

8. Brazil 20 Reis, 1869. NGC MS65BN. Nice chocolate brown with some underlying color.

image

9. German East Africa, 1890. NGC MS64BN. More wonderful color!

image

and lastly...

10. Prussia 1 Thaler, 1861. Raw AU. May not be as nice in hand, but figured it was worth a gamble...

Received the JamminJ coins today. Great coins, and I'll be keeping them, but they confirmed my suspicions: The colorful toning, while there, is nowhere near as vibrant as depicted in the auction photographs. I think there may be some Photoshop adjustment of saturation levels being done after the fact.

This is not meant as a dig towards the seller, I know how tough capturing toned coins is; I wish I could capture coins half as well. But if you're contemplating buying some neon-toned coins based on the pictures, lower your expectations a notch or two from what you see in the pictures, and you'll be happy. The coins will have those colors, but a bit darker and subdued compared to the pictures, especially blues...

Well sorry to hear that one got away; you MUST be very disaapointed. FYI since world prices spiked two years ago I now lose 95+% of my bids. I used to get occasional nice foreign coins and now it's like I get 0 better coins per year. I've been told that there are people with assets in the 1e+09 range who are buying ALL better foreign material.

I think I'll turn to something cheaper, like buying houses...

Yeah, it definitely seems to be a seller's market for high-grade (MS64+) certified world material.

However even at the inflated prices that some of these may seem, they pale in comparison to what U.S. material from the same era in comparable grades and/or toning routinely sell for. Even high priced world coins are bargains in comparison.

For example: The Austria 1 Heller, 1901 in MS66BN seems incredibly high at $35 versus a Krause listing of $3 in UNC. But try finding a U.S. 1901 1 cent (or any common date Indian cent) in MS66 for less than 5x that price. It can't be done. Looking through completed Ebay auctions for MS66 Indians show NONE from any reputable TPGs, only NNC, NTC, PNGS, and other variants of "Bob's slabbing Co."

Looking back through Teletrade auctions, there was a 1900 66BN for $140 in 2003, an 1899 in 66BN for $210 in 2005, various 66RBs in the $400+ range. About the closest you come in price is once you hit Lincolns in 1909 with MS66s ranging from $45 to $100.

$35 doesn't seem so high any more.

Granted there's more liquidity for U.S. material, but that seems to be changing...

    P.S. Sarcasm noted. image
