Thoughts on this colored 1879-S Morgan

I do not know the Morgan series very well, I usually just collect Peace Dollars. I needed to fill my 7070 book, so I bought this one today. Mr. Dealer stated it was MS63. I liked the color, doesn't look AT as far as I know, so I went ahead and bought it. Greysheet states there was a reverse of 78 used on this year, how does one tell if this has the regular or '78 reverse?

Toning looks fine -- not worth a premium, but not fugly either. The Rev of 78 has the concave eagle breast that most 1878 coins have. Yours is the convex eagle breast.

By the tailfeathers is one sign. A 1878 typically has 8 tailfeathers on the Eagle. The one you have has 7.

Likewise not all 78`s have 8 either and the only year where it`s intended to have 8 that I know of. Some reverse dies where reused since it was cheaper to use them up til they wore out.

Yours is the standard reverse of 79. Look at the topmost arrow feather on the left. If its slanted like your coin its reverse of 79; if its straight or parallel then its reverse of 78. I would add that I'm not particularly enamored at the toning but if it suits your purpose thats all that counts.

The toning looks a little fugly to me, but perhaps the blues will grow as time goes on...

I'm not crazy about the toning either. But for a 7070 album, it will do.

I don't think the toning on that 1879-S is very attractive. There is not enough rainbow effect and the toning seems very dark.
