Pop report/Registry weighting

SOMSOM Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭
After reading the thread on the 1959 variations, and how much they command on the open market, I still find it hard to believe that PSA doesn't assign weight to the truly tough-to-find cards in the Registry sets.

The Pierce card #572 in '59 Topps? Shouldn't that be a 10 weight? How about the #11 Hunter? At least an 8.

All of the Topps sets have their usual suspects. Don Demeter holds the '67 collectors hostage. 1978 is terrorized by Terry Forster. Fred Stanley haunts 1977. Lou Brock has the '69ers under seige.

Any idea why PSA doesn't accurately reflect these facts of life?

Weighting is based on the SMR value in PSA 8, and they never seem to adjust SMR for low pops. Scarcity doesn't play into the weighting.

As it shouldn't I would guess as far as PSA is concerned. I doubt they would want to take part in adjusting weights as some pops go up undermining the top guys ratings. just my guess image

I sense a circular argument here.

Weighting is based upon SMR value? We all know that SMR doesn't reflect reality. Why then should the weighting be based upon that fiction?

Or does my third sentence sum this all up?

I agree that the actual "SMR"'s don't reflect reality BUT PSA does do a pretty good job determining WHICH cards they should set a faulty higher value to.

It seems like a script could used to automatically querey the pop database every week and automatically adjust the weighting numbers based on a predetermined algorithm.
