What every old numismatist wants to hear from a young numismatist...

...and...what every parent wants to hear from their kid...

..."Daddy?..can I start a coin collection like yours?"...

These were the words from my daughter today as she looked at the bright shinny 2001 Kenedy Half (~MS62-ish) "The Tooth Fairy" gave to her for loosing her most recent tooth. My next step is going to be letting her figure out what she's interested in...pennies...nickels...dimes...quarters...halves...whatever but I was going to try steering her in the direction of something attainable. Like a set of Lincoln Memorials (without the DDOs!!) or a set of Jeff Nickels.

Oh...BTW...I also gave her her first "rip"...I traded her a 1936 Walker for her 2001 Kennedy. Maybe I'll take her to the local shop and see what she can do on a started set of whatever she decides to collect.

Excellent! I would steer her towards 19th century proof double eagles. Large, gold, high-grade and everyone wants them. I would collect them by date and by die state.

Start her off of Roosevelt Dimes. That's a collection that she can complete 100%, have some silver in it, have some modern rarities (1996-W), and be able to finish the set without it costing a fortune.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

That is awesome. I took my youngest daughter to her first show when she was 12 and she was amazed. I let her get an old Roman coin and a handful of circulated Mercs to start a board set. In the last year she has looked thru my bulk bags and almost completed a Lincoln 09-present set as well as a Merc set (minus the keys). She is totally hooked.
I have started a bust half set for her in F-VF grade that she doesn't know about yet----I want to have it done for her by her 16th birthday.

I share your happiness and enthusiasm. Good for you and good luck and God bless her.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

a copy of the Redbook and a few coin magazines (any month and year will do) should light the way, along with a supportive Dad!

She's 6 years old. I'll see what she takes a shine to this evening and then we can go to our local shop during the upcoming week to pick out an album.

Actually, my son is more likely to take coins out of the collection and "shine them up"... He's 4. He already obsconded with an 1852 Large Cent when I was in the bathroom. I didn't notice it right away but when I did, I found it in his "Trick Dog" bank... a replica of the '30's bank where you put a coin in the dogs mouth anf press a lever to trip the spring loaded dog to "jump" through a hoop and deliver a coin into a barrel. These are real torture devices for coins and turned my VF35 piece into a piece of ...well... you know what. A couple of lower grade Buff Nicks also suffered the same fate, but they were already pretty beat up.

Thanks for all the kind words...and I'll let you all know what she decides to pursue.

    Best Regards,

    Leo

Well, it looks like my daughter has taken a shine to Kennedy Halfs and Ike Dollars...big and shiney! I'm taking her to the shop this afternoon and show her some other stuff but are there any suggestions for either of these series? I'm unfamiliar with both.

    Thanks

Over the weekend my 5 year old daughter had my loupe in one hand and my silver proof set in the other. The 3 year old daughter was tugging at the proof set, trying to get it from the 5 year old. An agrument ensued, all over a proof set! It was a proud moment!
