Alexander the Great Tetradrachm - Opinions on Authenticity, Grade and Valuation

StuartStuart Posts: 9,793 ✭✭✭✭✭
How does a collector evaluate the authenticity of a raw ancient coin such as this Alexander the Great Tetradrachm from a photograph prior to making a purchase?? I would also like the forum's opinions on the grade and valuation of this specific example.

I assume that you must have built up some trust and confidence with the ancient coin dealer, and a money back guarantee would also help mitigate some of the commercial purchasing risk.

Thanks in advance for your observations about the coin, and also for your comments on the best methodology for this type of purchasing decision. image

The type with crossed legs was minted after Alexander died I believe, so this example would date to after 323 BC if it is real.

As to the authenticity of this coin, I don't get a good feeling based on what I see in the pics, to me it has that cast look to it.

I also believe it has that cast look. Also, some of the details just look too good...

That particular eBay seller ALWAYS uses a brown background... like a piece of cardboard...Don't know why, but find it interesting.

Staples Numismatic is a pretty reliable seller but I can't tell from the image if it is real or not.

Aethelred, JZRarities and Ajaan: I agree with you that this particular Alexander the Great Tetradrachm looks too good to be true for that old a coin, and it does appear to have a "cast look" to it.

Thanks very much to you all for posting and sharing your expertise!! image
