Is there some reason I don't yey know of as to why there is so little interest in 1960 TOPPS football cards? The SMR for some of these cards is ridiculious to me as they are dirt cheap even in high grade. . . WHY?

Well it's simple really...I think for the most part people in their later years when they take up collecting or resume collecting, collect things they enjoyed or where exposed to as a child. Not in every case of course but in many cases. Many child baseball card collectors at that time didn't care to collect football cards, hence they are not as popular. That being said, I strongly agree that those football cards are undervalued especially because things have changed in that the NFL is now more popular than MLB, whereby in the 60's it was just the opposite.
Here are a few reasons why...
#1- Lack of rookie cards..Forrest Gregg is the biggest RC in the set..You look at 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1962, 1963 and 1965 Topps and there are FAR more superstar, high interest rookies in those sets. Rookies still drive the industry...
#2-Lack of difficulty in high grade. 1960 Topps is not one of the tougher sets from its era 1955-1965 to get in high grade...Here's the top 10 toughest to get in PSA 8 or higher(from toughest to easiest). This is based on percentage of cards graded PSA 8 or higher divided by total number of cards graded for each issue.
1-1965 Topps
2-1955 Topps All-American
3-1962 Topps
4-1958 Topps
5-1955 Bowman
6-1957 Topps
7-1963 Topps
8-1956 Topps
9-1960 Topps
10-1963 Fleer
#3- Lack of popularity. 1960 Topps is the 4th LEAST graded issue from its era. The lowest:
1962 Fleer
1964 Topps
1963 Fleer
1960 Topps
People don't send these in to get graded because you almost need a PSA 8 or better for most commons to even get back your grading fees. Its definitely an underappreciated set, but the value lies in how the set is perceived by collectors. Those who collect cards from their childhood care less about value and more about the nostalgia. But if you want to know why certain cards sell for a premium while others sell for less, it boils down to collector interest. 1960 Topps just doesn't have the BANG that many of the other sets from around the same time period have.
It does have room to grow in terms of value and popularity, and at the current selling rates the cards are probably good bargains for a long term collection. But after the big stars (Unitas, Brown) and the one major rookie (Forrest Gregg) there isn't much here to distinguish above and beyond other sets from the late 50's-early 60s...

according to my values and my needs. Nothing holds dominion over me, I stand alone as the ruler of my life.
60 toppsguy? now is a great time to be a buyer for that issue.

for you at least it is.

Great post. Thanks for the informative news.
I wouldn't bring any more attention to this set than need be if I were a collector. Steve is right, buy them while you can.
