My bank hasn't sent me actual checks since the 1970's.

I guess some banks are sending copies now.

It's called "Check 21" - the banks are eliminating handling the actual cancelled checks - you just get an image of it. The laws have been changed to make the image as valid as the original. Your original has been shredded. The banks will save $$$millions by not handling the billions of returned checks.

  • Nothing to do with PCGS. I haven't received an actual check back from my bank in many years! For a while they photocopied them and gave pages with small images of the checks. Now it's nothing but a list of check numbers and amounts. Welcome to the 21st century.

Maybe I should add all the other checks I received, (15 or so), are the original, so it's not my bank, which is BOA. Also, I'm just now getting around to cleaning up my desk and realized this was last months statement. This months has all original checks, no copies.

I do understand the concept of banks using copies, but I'm wondering why the only copy I have ever received was this single check made out to PCGS.
  • A different Federal check clearing house? - I bet all of your other checks are local to your region.

I get a "copy" of my checks now and I hate it.

    Just a coincidence.

Most likely the original was damaged, impaired, lost or destroyed. They had the image and that's what you got.

I am surprised you still get copies, does that account require a higher balance or combined balances? Just curious. I have not had copies for about 20 yrs.

I can't even remember the last time I wrote a check.

Is this a must for submitting coins to PCGS?

Don't worry, over the time the number of originals will continue to drop and the number of copies will increase. And it is becoming more and more difficult to get an account where they even send you copies. As said more and more are going to just putting the check numbers and amounts in your statement. If you need a "cancelled check" they can print you off a copy (for a fee. The last one I had done was almost illegible, the quality was so bad.) I don't even get a paper statement mailed to me anymore. Since I have their online banking program on my computer I can call up my statements any time I want online.

That just means the others you issued checks to have not yet gotten up to speed.

According to the submission form the preferred payments are:

Cash (I assume only for walkthroughs)
    Check
    Money Order
    Visa
    Master Card
    American Express
    Ken

    My first post...updated with pics

I collect mostly moderns and I'm currently working on a US type set.

I use BOA too. You can go online to print out any copies of checks you need. You don't need to pay extra to have your checks returned to you. (At least they charge extra for that at my branch.) Since I only write checks for bills and have only once in 15 years needed a copy of a check for proof of payment and since I don't get the originals returned anymore, the online service works fine for me. It may not work for you as well.

As for why your check to PCGS was a copy and all the rest are originals, I would assume that you mostly write checks in your local area.

I don't think it is an indicator of anything untoward.
