Are two sided toned coins the real thing?

I have heard that two sided toned coins are very rare and that most are artificially toned. Is there any truth to this or is it just fiction? Here is a obverse picture of my two sided frosty toned cameo DMPL with some cool looking color contrast.image

As stated, that premise is incorrect in my opinion. I believe that a coin which is toned only on one side is just as likely to be artificially toned as one that is toned on both sides.
  • I would say that its a false statement but certainly folks are prone to question a coin with matching toning on both sides. Here is a link to a thread showing off numerous two side toners as evidence that they aren't particularily rare in many cases. Exceptions to the rule would be End Roll toners and Bag toned Morgans......finding them with color on both sides while not impossible is extremely rare. On the other hand album toned coins are very frequently found with matching bulseye type toning on both sides......see my example below:

This is the picture of the toned revese DMPL image
  • By the way I see nothing in your images to suggest that your coin is AT in anyway. Yours is a bag toned coin that was probably near a corner on the bottom of the bag so that the bag touched part of both sides. I bet it's a stunner in hand as color over DMPL surfaces usually means a lot of pop and eye apeal image

It is good to hear that this toner is not AT and there are other toned coins with both sides toned without AT. She is a stunner with the DMPL fields set against the colors and frost. Thank you for your comments and the threads to look at, it has been very educational.
