Another Possible New 1921-D Variety Find

I bought this from Heritage's inventory and it arrived today. I thought it might have been a VAM-1W but wasn't sure because of the dark toning and their typically bad imaging. Anyway, I have not been able to match it to any documented variety. A key feature is a break at the upper left of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM that is similar to the one on the reverse N on the VAM-1i. Here are a few images. This one was really tough to photograph with my Sony F717 because of the toning and crappy macro focal limitations of the camera. I think it is clear enough. Anyway, it is out to Leroy Monday morning unless someone can ID it as a known variety. It might be a terminal state for the VAM-5A? Doesn't have that chip/break at the inside bottom of the lower loop of the 2nd S in STATES though.

  • John,
I don't think it is a terminal 5A without the die chip in the S. Looks to be new. Good luck with the designation from Leroy!

Thanks! The crack from that S to the rim is all wrong anyway for a 5A. (BTW, it's in an NGC 64 holder.) This one is as good as out the door.

Yes, it is the same one, yours just being an earlier state of it.

Here is the description I have for Leroy to accompany that coin (among a bunch of others). I think if your piece has any of the mentioned actual breaks, it would be the same VAM. Otherwise, it would still qualify as an EDS.

    1921-D NGC MS64 (1531690-010) “E M S Breaks”
Obv – Break at left of upper left serif of E in E PLURIBUS UNUM; break upper inside left of M in UNUM; parallel polish lines between cotton bolls.
Rev – Break at upper left of second S in STATES (similar to VAM-2B).

  • I think it may be and EDS of yours.

See if your polishing lines in the cotton bolls look similar.

There may also be some slight doubling in some of the Letters in AMERICA as well.

  • Let me know what VAM Leroy assigns to it so I can add it to my die state collection!! image

I will post any assignments to the forum here that I get and I will keep you in mind personally on this one. I have 20 being evaluated now and another 10 going out Monday. Not sure how successful I'll be in getting designations. All the 21-D ones will go over to Rob anyway afterward.

  • Hey, guys, can I play? I'll use the same progression as Mad4Morgans:

If I can play, too, I'll raise you a die crack from the second-right star through the neck, and from the denticles above the F all the way through AMERICA and DOLLAR. These aren't so clear in the indirect lighting I used for the pics. In addition, there's die polishing showing inside and to the right of the bow (but not the left), and between a few of the leaves and the stems.

I've been wondering what this one was. It seems pretty close to what you're all posting here.

Not necessarily. Darn near every crack addict in the world is posting in this thread. Between us, we may have all of 'em. image
