The Da Vinci Code has been a best selling book for quite a while now. I've heard mixed reviews about the movie, and regardless of how the movie does at the box office, this book will remain controversial for a long time.

I've also seen some of those recent shows on the Discovery and History channels and of course there have been many other TV shows on this topic for years now...and of course books on this subject for many centuries. As Paul Simon once wrote, "still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest" certainly can be said about many people's religious beliefs.

It just goes to show how completely drunk with power the religious right in this country has become when they start calling for boycotts for a work of fiction.

They want to claim that a movie is going to color the opinions of some potential church goers? Pathetic.

I plan on seeing it. Hanks is (almost) always money and anything that sticks it to the religious cults of this country I am all in favor of.

Hanks' best work was in the Toy Story movies.

He was excellent in Philadelphia, though it was brilliant pairing him with Tim Allen in those Toy Story movies.

    Hey, I love those two!

  • Which is better... The book or movie?
  • I don't know why this movie would "make you think". After all, it is fiction. No reason why folks can't enjoy a work of fiction. The problem is that 20-30% of the perople who read the book and will see the movie are too stupid or too gulible to understand the difference. Or perhaps there are some out there that want to tear down the belief systems of others because they have none themselves. JMHO.

I don't think anyone suggested 'tearing down' anyone's belief system.

But just as appaling is the 'boycotting' that some folks of the religious right want to pursue, as if this were some sort of non-fictional account of what happened. All they are doing is (a) giving it more free publicity and (b) legitimizing it for those people who don't know the history. If the religous folks truly wanted this movie to disappear, they'd not give it the time of day.
  • I have read the book, did not see the movie, and ANYthing that can discredit the religious sect, whether it is fact or fiction, I am all for it. I love to plss off religious people as much as I love ticking off Yankee fans!!!!!!!!!!!!

from what ive heard so far, the movie is horrible and does the book injustice..

i havent read the book, but i heard that the problem some people have with it is that somewhere at the beginning it says something about it being "fact"..

  • Panandrews is correct, the history channel has dissected the theories quite well, and shows waaay to many inaccuracies.

I would recommend seeing the history channel programs as opposed to the movie.

The Catholic church is so full of B.S. it is unbelieveable. All religions.

Remember that in the history of the world that more people have died in the name of God than for any other reason.

It is amazing how easily people believe things that are told to them, and totally disregard reality. That is why I always reference Atlas with the sports arguments, as sports fans sometimes do the same thing for 'their' guys.
  • I am a putz, however, you people still take your time to reply to me, if I did not get to you, then you would not reply! Let's go with the name calling, if I am a putz, you are fat, and I bet you jump to every call your old lady says, if you ever got past that sniffing butt stage!!!!

Wow, Skinpinch and I actually agree on something concerning the Church and religions! The book nonetheless, was good in my opinion, even though my opinion does not matter! I also have seen the History Channel progs too, wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Hardcore, religions have their positives, but unfortunately it is also the root cause of the most dangerous problems the world has seen.

When we disagree about sports, like I often do with my friends, it is just sports. We can have a heated argument about a topic, but afterwards we can still go out and shoot some hoops, go to a game together, or piss on each others leg at 3 AM, because it is just a release.

I find it odd that people want to dissect the book/movie looking for errors, when it's a work of fiction.

And I don't believe any god exists, so yes, athiest would be a good definition for my belief system.

  • Ax, at what point in your life did you come to that realization/conclusion? Was there an event?
  • The problem in the world is, if one person's opinion differs from the so called, mainstream feeling, then said person is wrong. Axtell does not believe in God, but since he may not, then he is "wrong." I know of devout Catholics who think other people should not be trusted, and would beat their kids and wife and rule with an iron fist, that is wrong. I have been forced to sit in Catholic masses for weddings, christenings, and such, and if there is anything racist, it is them, I have heard on many occasions, how Jews are sinners and they are wrong. The Da Vinci Code is and was a work of fiction, but it was a good book, at least to me, nonetheless. The thought, "everything happens for a reason," is not how I believe. Organized religion is only for one thing, it is money, it is not even for worship, not too many people can worship for free, but as a Catholic, one can sin, and they can go to confession, and be forgiven for their sins, if they continue to make their cult payments! People say "what would Jesus do," and I say, "what has Jesus done for you?" He paid for MY sins, when, supposedly 2006 years ago. What if Jesus really did have a fling with Mary, having a daughter Sarah, and moved to the present day France and lived? Perhaps that is why France is a pacified country of arrogant wimps! In sports, players thank Jesus for their wins, but how come they never blame him for their losses? To me, the Ten Commandments are not anything religious, they are merely common sense, but then again, I have wanted a neighbor's wife on a couple occasions, some of them were hot! Does that make me a sinner? Some believe in God, some do not, some wonder, I am one who can care less either way, who is anyone to tell me or anyone else who is wrong or right?

I enjoyed the movie. it is kind of the same movie as national treasure with nick cage. treasure hunt type movie.

they take the picture of the last super and twist a story out of it. movie wasnt the best i have ever seen... but it goes fast and is interesting.

<< <i>Ax, at what point in your life did you come to that realization/conclusion? Was there an event? >>

I went to a christian school from K-6, so I am very fluent with the stories in the bible, the messages, etc.

There was no single event that drew me to this conclusion, I just could no longer rationalize belief in an entity that would allow terrible things to happen to good people, all in the name of testing one's 'faith'. I could no longer sit by and watch as science (i.e. evolution) was cast aside in favor of fairy tales (i.e. crationism, or as they say now 'intelligent design').

I don't begrudge anyone their faith. If it's what you want/need in your life for peace, more power to you. You won't see me hounding my good friends who are devout christians about their faith, you just won't see me partaking in it.

    1420:

care to elaborate what exactly you think 'explains a lot' about my being atheist?
