Help grade the Morgan Please - New Pics - still think dipped?

StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
EDIT: OK, I actually went and bought a tripod and additional lighting, what a difference. This is the same coin with the same camera. I think your grade guesses will probably stay the same, but I am more interested in those who said it was dipped. If you still think so, please let me know where/what you are seeing that makes you think it is.

You can almost see the die crack that runs from the "O" in One through "D" in United.

Thanks everyone for sharing their knowledge to one of the new guys.

Jeff

Lunchtime raw Morgan purchase at my little village antique store - not as nice as most that get posted here, but have to start somewhere. Still testing different picture taking techniques with an older digital camera, definately have to work on lighting and getting a tripod/stationary platform. Please guess a grade to see if my emerging grading skills are at least in the right ballpark.

Thanks Much!

I'm reluctant to hazard a guess. The luster looks subdued and there appears to be dip residue-- but it could just be your new photo technique. Then the cheek has an odd texture from the color or something. The coin could be anything grade-wise; just hard tp see.

You'd probably laugh at the "Technique". My Sony P71 sucks on macro, so I'm basically taking the picture through an old filmstrip projector lens held up to the camera lens: image The images do look slightly duller than in person - I blame my lighting for that. If I had the light too much closer I got shiny spots.

The cheek does have some wear and slight discoloration, almost looks like a greasy fingerprint on top of some wear. The mark on the nose looks fairly recent and is noticeable in hand.

If you don't mind, is the dip residue you mentioned the darker outlines around the letters/stars and such?

My personal guess was somewhere between EF-40 and AU-50 (Told you my grading is "emerging" aka non-existant). The store just had it marked "VF-XF"

I don't think I did bad, it was marked $15.00 and as with most coins they sell me, he marked it down some so it only cost me $13.00.

Some sort of AU grade but the way your shooting the pics makes picking a grade difficult.

    AU 58, but over-dipped.

Not worth slabbing, but would make a nice pocket piece.

I bought a tripod and some architect lights like Russ has in his setup. I think I improved the pics dramatically. They are still a shade "Yellowish" compared to reality, but it's much closer than the 1st batch. Getting closer I think, but still have some work to do.

If you still think it's dipped, that's fine, could you just tell me what you're seeing to make you believe that (For educational purposes). For the $13 I paid for this, it isn't going to hurt my feelings, but I'd rather learn before it's a $213 lesson.

    Thanks All!

    Jeff,

Actually I like both pictures, and am curious which color is more acurate. If I was to guess, I would imagine it is closer to the second one, but not quite as golden. It does not looked dipped at all to me, in fact it looks to have original skin. As for grade, I believe it's a AU58, and a very nice looking 58 at that.

Holding the coin up to the monitor, I'd say the 2nd batch of pictures captures it with about 90% accuracy.

The pics still show it duller, as I can get some cartwheel out of it when I swivel it in the light. The new pics reverse at 10:00 and 2:00 where I had the light shows it pretty accurately, I may need to add a 6:00 light as well I'm thinking.

I see a nice high AU coin there. In most cases, I would take a nice AU Morgan over a 61 or 62 clunker.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Thanks for the new pictures--I think you've almost certainly caught the coin's look accurately. That alone is a major achievement. The thing everyone is seeing that indicates multiple dipping is firstly the subdued luster. Some Morgans aren't that lusterous but the 87's are.
    ------------------
The other indicator of poor dipping is the darker gold toning that is clinging to the areas around the devices and inside the letters. I suppose the best way to learn the look is to take a bullion 1921 Morgan and dip it in "Tarn-X" available at the grocery store. Let the coin sit in the window sill for a few days after every dip. Eventually--- even though you really wash it in water a very well, the coin will have that brown residue just like yours if you leave it around for awhile unprotected.

    Read Coxe's post--it's not a bad coin.

AU-58. As others said, not worth slabbing, but a good buy for $13. Would look nice in an album!!
