Camera Recommendation

I am so tired of my macro being horribly insufficient in capturing VAM details on the current camera (Sony Baloney F717). Saw a yesteryear Canon A530 and was thinking of giving it a shot. The A540 has a bigger LCD but a bigger price. I am not sure about the limitations in focusing on details with such a small viewer. It has a digital video output but that could prove inconvenient for regular use. I plan to cannibalize a broken tripod to build a copystand. Could kick myself for discarding my father-in-law's 3 professional copystands when he lassed away.

Any thoughts on the camera or a decent quality alternative? Being able get a quality focused, flexible lighting, steady macro shot mby hand would be great. I think 5Mp is plenty.

I dont know how professional you want them to look, but I personally think something like this is plenty.



It was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 5600 and my cheap loupe. I held the loupe to the camera and played with it for a few seconds.. it works pretty well if you ask me.

This is the pic I trot out for all the camera recommendaiton threads. Its an actual-size image of my avatar, from my Canon S2 IS, taken the day I bought the camera. Remember, this is as good a point-and-shoot camera as it gets with 12x optical zoom and image stabilization, in addition to the superior macro. The lens for this pic was 1/2" from the coin.
