My MS66 Ike Has a Problem.....

Today I drove Norfolk to Richmond (190 miles round trip) for a show advertised on coinshows.com as 100+ tables. To my disappointment it was no where near that size--maybe 35-40. Very little slabbed type (unless you count no-name slabs with hand typed labels). I circled the floor 3 times before looking a little closer at a dealer table of errors, many PCGS slabbed. I noticed a nice Ike.....

1978-D
PCGS MS66
$350 (label price)

Struck a deal to take it at $275. Looking at Heritage the most recent sale was $276, so not bad. Population is about 220 in MS66, 1 higher, so this is far from one of the common MS66 clad Ikes like 71-D or 76-D Type 2.

The problem is the coin is 5% off center! Yes an MS66 that is 5% off center! I wonder how many true error clad Ikes can claim a PCGS MS66 grade??

Sorry no pictures while I am in Norfolk.

Did PCGS label it as off-center?
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!

Send it back and ask for a centered one image

Yes it is labelled as Mint Error 5% Off Center.

No I will not return it!

The only sad part is it replaces my (home made) MS65 that is a 7% clip. For the wise guys, home made means I submitted it, not that I clipped it!

$275 is what you should pay for a centered one. I bet I know of some folks who would buy it from you if you were interested. No, it's not just me. Congrats on the purchase.

    You got a bargain.

A centered one if worth $300+ (If it's nice).

Most off-centers are high grade. Maybe they were pulled early, so MS66 is high grade but not totally unusual.

Anyway, you got a great deal in my book!

good buy imo, any 5% off center Ike in a good slab ms66 is worth more there not at all common in the market place.

    I have two 78-P PCGS MS66 Off Center Ikes...One is 5% and one 7%.
The 7% was "homemade".....and they both cost me a heck-of a lot more than yours!....
    You did GREAT!image
