There hasn't been a true repunched date on any American coin since 1909.

That's a Class III doubled die, not a repunched date.

doubled die, they must have switched master hubs then?
  • errormavenerrormaven Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭
Two different working hubs were used to impress the design into the working die. One working hub carried the 1941 date and the other carried the 1942 date. It's the same mishap that produced the 1918-D 8/7 Buffalo nickel.

I do not have the capability of getting a close up pic like some of you guys do, But I will however try and scan it monday.

The center 0 under mag shows another 0 on the inside left of of the center 0, almost similar to machine doubling. It cannot be machine doubling because no other ones are affected.

not quite sure what you mean by a die shift gem, but if you want I can send it to you if you have the capability of taking a shot of it. I have been pouring over alot of coins lately, and this really looks like another 0 underneath the prominent one. The center 0 also appears a wee bit fatter, almost like another was punched beneath it a little to the left.

    edit to add info.

Another thing that would make any 0/0 unlikely was that the Sacs came after the mints switched to the single squeeze hubbing of the dies. Now I know that there have still been some cases of doubled dies having been created, but about the only doubled die class I can think of right offhand that would mainly result in thickened letters/digits would be distorted hub doubling. That would require the hub to be changed between hubbing which seems VERY unlikely if they are trying to do single squeeze.

Puzzling........considering single squeeze......unless a defect or fragment worked itself into the die itself to create a double ..O..
