Ever accidentally buy a card you already had?

Ugh! I've done it twice this week. The seller of course does not want to cooperate but it is my own fault.

Anyone looking for an extra PSA 10 1999 Bowman Chrome Juan Rivera or an extra PSA 10 1991 Upper Deck Nolan Ryan?

Yea, I've been working on a 1970 registry set and bought two Billy Williams cards. I had too many auctions going on at the same time. I learned a lesson pretty quick that way.

I just started a 1970 registry set 6 weeks ago, and I'm sure I have at least 8 duplicates, I suck. I get to bidding then go and check my registry set to see if I need the card. Newbie, slow learner I guess.

    Live and learn.

My set is Kadokakid 70 topps or something like that. This sh## is addictive.

Yeah, I've done this. A couple of times they've supposedly been 1/1, according to the pop report. The seller got them up for sale before the pop report was updated.

One time as a seller, somebody won an auction from me and did the same thing. He told me what he did and offered to pay my ebay fees if it was ok if he didn't buy it. That seemed fair to me so I said ok. The only problem I would have though is if the card went for way more money than it normally does. Then I would want payment.

I keep a fairly updated wantlist for the sets I'm collecting - I try to cross out cards I buy at card shows as I buy them and I circle the number of a card I've won on ebay and cross it out when it arrives. However, I've occasionally failed to mark off a purchase and bought the card again - fortunately only commons.

Have you ever crossed off the last card, put it in your set, gone slowly through the whole set and realized there is another card missing that wasn't on your list?

Not as bad as selling a card you thought you had in duplicate.

[I once traded away a PSA 9 MINT 1955 Bowman card that I thought I had upgraded....but it was #77, not #87, that I had upgraded]. Oops!

ms- Wow, that had to hurt!

I have bought duplicates many times, especially raw cards at shows when I forgot to cross the card off my list and came home with two of the same card.
  • Yep, thankfully it was only my 88-89 Fleer BK set so I didn't pay too much for it. image

    Marc-
That is a sick story. I have purchased a duplicate before and it was only for $30. It really did not bother me too much, however if I sold one of the cards from my prized sets I would need professional help. That is a bad situation.

I was eventually able to replace the PSA 9 with another. Thankfully, it was one of the low numbers that I was able to find a few months later.

Since the trade was essentially PSA 9s for PSA 9s - I came out well in the trade, but I had gone into the trade expecting to only give up duplicate cards as well as some cash.

I've done this, too! You're right, ms, this hurts worse.

  • I've done it twice just recently. Fortunately it was seveal commons and didn't cost me to much.

Looking for 81-84 Topps Stickers in PSA 9 or better, 81 Topps Scratch offs, 83 Topps Fold outs in PSA 8 or better, 83 Fleer Stamps and 81/86 Fleer Star Stickers in PSA 9 or better.

More than twice! Actually in a few instances, I have re-sold the duplicate for a profit. Just did it with a 1970 John Unitas PSA 8.
I now keep a printed log of cards needed for the sets I am trying to complete and yellow highlight the cards as I buy them, keeps me straight.

Yes, it actually works out very nicely for upgrading my set. Not a big deal to turn around and resell the resulting double.

I think I might have you all beat. Just recently I bought a full set of 70 Kellogg's cards that I didn't think I had. Actually, I knew I had a mid grade raw set, but I didn't think I had many worth submitting, so I purchased a NM/MT set. I got the new set in, went to put it in the right box, and sure enough sitting there was my mid grade set along with another minty set that I guess I purchased a while back. For the life of me, I don't remember picking up that other nice set!

It must have been one of those late night eBay binges? Either that, or I have card fairy's messing with me! ;-)

I run off the checklist from the registry and highlight each card as I buy them. These are placed in page holders and put in a book. This is a good way to keep up with your sets.
