PCGS Submission Help - please!

I just renewed my membership again after a long break ...

Do the submissions have to be in 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 mylar flips? Will 2 x 2 Saflip's work or will PCGS reject them?
I will be submitting 19th Century Proof coins for a friend and some of these might be five-figure coins. Any suggestions as far as packaging ... straight into the saflip ... use a polybag ... something else?

I know that PCGS hates hairlines on modern proofs. Are they any more liberal on older proofs? How high will these grade if there are harilines? Most are only visible at 5x.

Any help would be appreciated. These coins were purchased in 1991 and most were purchased as PF/64's. They have been sitting in Capital-style holders since then. I'm pretty sure he severly overpaid for them 15 years ago, but some are easily CAM or DCAM and a couple have toned very nicely, so he might get lucky at getting out of them.

No pictures yet, but I will post them when I get them.

Thanks!
Jeff

Yes, because that's what fits in the grading trays.

A PCGS employee will remove the coins from the 2x2 flips and put them in 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 flips

Who do you want handling your coins - you or a PCGS employee in the receiving department?

If the coins are expensive, the best way is to put the flips flat in groups in a Safe-T-Mailer.
Otherwise you can rubber-band them together tight enough and wrap them in bubble wrap so they don't shfit around.

  • Do not put proof coins in poly bags. It is well known that poly bags can lead to haze on proof coin surfaces.

Regarding delivery: You should pack the flips in bubble wrap and secure them in as small a container as you can fit them and the paperwork inside. Then, package them to be sent registered mail with tracking, and insure them for the amount that you would want to receive from the USPS, if they happened to loose them!!

Thanks for the answers on the flips. Any comments about the grading of hairlines?

    Thanks!

Any flip will do, they will even take proof sets in the original mint packaging as long as you are willing to have all the coins graded. Hairlines will aways bring down the grade, but for 19th century proofs I wouldn't worry too much.

It's true that PCGS hates hairlines, and not just on moderns. But, there is no hard and fast rule. An average looking coin with a lot of hairlines might grade PR63, but a ball grabbing beauty with the same number of hairlines might grade Gem. A very strong right on the cusp of DCAM cameo coin that might normally grade at a certain level due to hairlining will get a little contrast grade bump. Hairlines that are difficult to see will affect the grade less than hairlines that are very obvious - and you should know that just because you need 5x to see them doesn't mean they are difficult to see. The PCGS graders can spot them hovering at 20,000 feet.
