San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Act release of Silver 2005 Proof sets + Westward Journey sets??

I believe San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Act includes a provision allowing the mint to sell remaining inventory of 2005 nickels. This would allow release of the appox. 185,000 remaing 2005 Silver Proof sets and 165,000 remaining Westward Journey nickel sets!!

Here is the response to two questions I made in Feb. to my congressional office.............

I received your call regarding the Westward Nickel Series. After some research, I was able to determine the status of the ability of the US Mint to sell the 2004-2005 Westward Series. As you said in your voice mail, law makers inadvertently legislated the halting of the series and an attempt has been made to fix this mistake. The House of Representatives has passed a bill, H.R. 1953 - San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Coin Act, which has a provision to allow the US Mint to once again sell whatever minted coins they have from the Westward Series. The bill must originate in the House and move to the Senate in this case and currently the bill in the Senate, S. 1881, has not garnered enough co-sponsors. The bill is in the Senate and will move once there is enough momentum to get it passed.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Sincerely,
Lauren

Bill,

I contacted the U.S. Mint last week and heard back from them today about your inventory questions.

The remaining inventory for the 2005 11 coin silver proof set is 185 560.
The remaining inventory of the Westwood nickel series is 165 913.

There has been no progress on any of the bills I mentioned in the other email. You can periodically check the status of the bill online if you go to www.congress.gov and type in the bill numbers.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Lauren

It would be a mistake to release over 100,000 2005 silver proof sets on to the market.....

    Thanks!
If I was sitting on a quantity of either set I'd start dumping before the word gets out.

Remember that this bill would allow the Mint to sell them. It does not mandate that they sell them or require them to sell them.
  • 100,000 silver proof sets for 2005 is NOT going to sink the coin market. It might sink somebody's boat that has only 2005 Silver proof sets as its cargo.

  • 2005 silver proof sets are only selling for a few bucks over issue, no room to dump.
  • For pete's sake, 2005 Silver proof sets are a microcosm of the coin world. Let the mint sell 'em off and in 10 years, maybe they'll be worth a bit more because silver content.
