  • Well, it is suppose to be a 70 point grading scale. It could be a 9 or 12.

Hey, it happens. A dealer friend of mine has a "PCGS VF-40" in stock. No, I'm not kidding.

Jack Beymer will sometimes grade a coin as an 11 or a 7 too.

I have actually bought low end stuff from this guy and I've been pleased. If I can see the coin well enough to grade it myself and I'm sure there are no rim dings and the price is right and I want the coin I buy it. Most of his stuff is overgraded but its priced more like it's real grade. if I see a good deal I jump. If I see an OK deal I keep looking.

I've purchased from this dealer and I've been satisfied. I'd stay away from that slab more than I'd stay away from the ebayer.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

I bought this from him. It's a vg, not a fine. He overgrades, but I felt this coin was worth what I paid.
Edited: He ships fast, and packs well. I wasn't unhappy with my purchase from him.

I was going to mention Jack Beymer, but someone beat me to it. He's not one who's known for overgrading or overhyping coins, and in fact he'll say when he thinks a slabbed coin is overgraded by giving his own (lower) opinion of the grade along with the slabbed grade. Yet he regularly uses VG-7 and I think I remember seeing VG-11 as well. VG-11 is actually a pretty useful grade where full LIBERTY is the standard defining factor for F-12 status. I've seen a lot of coins with *just* short of full LIBERTY and otherwise completely F-12 details. I'd call it VG-10 personally because I stick to the "accepted" designations, but I think "VG-11" could also accurately describe such a coin if graded conservatively. It would be to the VG grade what 35 is to the VF grade.

Howardsdirect has gotten a little embarrassing with their 8th world holders...

VG-7 is not an uncommonly used grade among EACers, but VG-11 is a little odd. And although Howards direct has been associated with a lot of fourth tier services, if he is self slabbing these he is going to another state to do it. Howards Direct is in Ohio and CCGS is located in Michigan.. I haven't checked a map tough to see just how far apart they are.

Just because the # is not universally used does not make it improper to use.

I wholeheartedly endorse the use of all the #'s and would use it my self if the situation existed.

What the number means to me is that this coin is almost fine.
