Why is there such a big price difference on the Encyclopedia of Gold Coins book?

I was just about to click the "order" button on the Whitman site, when I started to wonder whether another supplier was also offering the book. Whitman lists the book at $69.95. Mid-American has it at $69.50 (including a signature). But Amazon has the book listed as $44.07 (it is still in "pre-order" status at Amazon, so who knows whether it may take 6 months to actually get it). For those in the know, how can there be such a big price disparity among sellers for a book that is literally still warm from the printing presses?

This must be a pretty exclusive book, because QDB has not even seen it yet. Here is a cut and paste from his most recent market report:

Whitman has announced the publication of the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933 later this month. We have ordered a supply, and stand ready to deliver them as soon as received. As a special pre-publication offer, we’ll ship your copy postpaid if you order it on or before June 15th. Send your order now and you will be among the first to get yours. We haven’t seen our own copy yet, but know that with Ron Guth and Jeff Garrett as the authors (the same people who did The 100 Greatest United States Coins) and with specimens illustrated from the Smithsonian Institution, it’s bound to be a winner!

I checked Amazon after avoiding registering at Whitman, and placed my order with a July 21st shipping date. I have so much reading material piled up that I won't get to it til after the ANA, so I can be patient. The Bass syllogy sat untouched on my desk for months, but I have read it several times since.

I went the most expeditious route (pre-release order from Whitman) so that I would have the best chance to get my book review post completed before Longy. My book was shipped to me on Tuesday.

Publishers can't sell at a discount because the retailers would scream bloody murder that they were being undercut. Chances are the Whiltman price is the "official" retail price.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

RYK doesn't read the book....he just looks at the pictures image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Longacre may be able to read faster, but only RYK can compare the Encyclopedia to the Akers books to see if it's a decent replacement for them.

I thought RYK sold the Akers books on Ebay (for a song)?

    No, No. . .

He bought the books on eBay for a song.

He kept the half eagle volume.

He sold the rest of the books on eBay for a very nice profit.

I expect nothing less from RYK. Now he just needs to do that with all of that Southern gold that he has. image

Thanks for the Amazon tip. Such a cheapskate I am image

Btw, this one book contains more color images U.S. coins in the Smithsonian than any other I can think of.
