What's the best auction house to sell "A" box toned Morgans?

fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
A good friend of mine is selling his entire coin collection....several 100 K worth. Heritage is flying down to pick his collection up. He is going to let me "piggy back" some of my coins in with his collection for the pre ANA sell.
I am considering sending my best toned Morgans to Heritage. Which auction house has the best results selling super nice toned Morgans?

Heritage doesn't seem to have a lot of toner Morgans but I don't check that closely these days. I would try to do some comparison of the pix they put up against what the real thing looks like in hand. If you feel better supplying your own pix I would ask about that.

If it's Heritage, they better be in an auction that people can lot view... I wouldn't trust their pictures with ANYTHING whose value was derived mostly on its color...

Like others have said, Heritage's picture quality is very poor and will cost you dearly. Fine another venue to sell your coins. Pretty soon I will be selling my monster toned Morgans and will have the same problem.

I think ANR would do a great job in realizing top results. Their reputation is top notch and their catalog images are very good IMO.image

How about I image each coin for $25 a piece and then you send them to heritage along with the images to use. imageimage

  • Heritage has poor photos which is why I no longer go over there to drool. However, are most of Heritage's clients buying the "holder" rather than the coin? That would make a big difference in the realization.

Ira & Larry Goldberg do a wonderful job on toned coins

and they have terrific full color pictures of all coins.

  • I'd go ANR.

You did win my toned Morgan photo contest Brandon.image

OK. Thanks guys...Heritage is out. Looks like it might be a choice between ANR or Superior.

Anyone else want to chime in??

Going with Heritage is a huge mistake, in my opinion. I would probably use ANR or Bowers.

Look--ANR just set a record price for a single toned Morgan ($23,000) - if the coins are A+ and MS65 or better, why not go with results???

Since Superior had the Battle Creek stuff and did very well with it, they have tried to have some killer Morgan toners in every one of their sales. Don't overlook them for that niche of the coin market.

Steve Deeds showed me how to crack out a coin once at a coin show. He seems like a super nice fellow.

Steve Deeds is at Bowers & Merena, by the way. He ran Superior's auction dept for a few years, but was hired away by B&M maybe 3 years ago. I agree - he is a nice guy.

Actually, the buyers for killer toned Morgans will find them with whoever you consign them with.Heritage probably has the largest internet collector base, and their photography will get better.Superior has some good qualities, and Goldberg and ANR have good photography.Bottom line is the buyers for the A+ Morgans will find them.Good luck.

Have Russ sell them on E-Bay.

I agree. Heritage wouldn't be a bad choice. A lot of people view their auction lots and Heritage wants to maximize the price realized for their own profit and reputation.
