submission results from NGC

I am a newcomer to the boards. I am retired and still have some of the coins I got in change as a little kid. Not many but a couple of dozen. most are in for grading and expect results tomorrow. One is a 1926 d buffalo nickle that a friend assures me will grade at least a 63. Not bad for pocket change as a child. I actually started to feverishly start purchasing coins in past couple of years. Well that was after my middle aged daughter seemed unhappy I had so much money hidden in my night stand! So I thought well then I will start collecting for my grandsons which are just toddlers! It has become addicting and I now have upwards of 1600 graded coins. Most of which are as many sayl modern crap but in 20 yrs I figure they would be worth something? To my questions I received most of my grades today and have a couple of questions from the experts! Is a grade with PL in state quarters a premium in value over the standard MS67 or 68 grade ie. 67 vs 67 PL ? I also got a 1996 dime that graded MS69 FT. I can not find a value listed for that coin does anyone have an idea? Thank you everyone for this great forum!!! dennis

Proof Like (PL) designations are ALWAYS worth a premium. I stick with Buffalo nickels and pre-1958 Lincoln cents so I can't give you any idea in regards to value, but PL is a very good thing. You'll have to push this thread to the top in the morning to see if anyone can give you pricing.

I'm no expert in moderns, but it sounds like you may have spent more in the grading fees than the coins are worth. I would be careful submitting moderns, especially state quarters unless they are significant condition rarities.

  • Thanks for the advice. This past year I have been very descriminating on my buying. I have only bought highest grades I could afford. Nothing less in modern coins than MS67 or PF 70 except I have a good collection of wisconson high and low leafs in ms64 upwards which I purchased before the prices tripled. The only other coins I have submitted in state quarters were the 1999 ms P and Ds and 90% got ms 67 or better as well as several PL which according to ebay should sell pretty well with a good profit if I don't flood the market I guess. I also sent in quiet a few 1996 W dimes which none have come back less then ms 67 and I see on teletrade they are going for about 10x my investments. The biggest mistakes were franklin halves. I just find it hard to get good high grades from raw coins. Bought an old bank roll 63 last year for 75 dollars and found but one fbl in 64 and all the rest would grade just ms 64 after sending just one in as a sample for grading. I see I may have wasted some money on that. I also purchased a heck of a lot of graded modern comm. on teletrade last year as well as lots of first strikes and thought afterwards what dope I was but now with silver up they are selling for about 30% more than I paid on ebay which I am now using to buy more wisely I hope! I also have quiet a few early wheats in mid range grades which I thought I would start the grandkids out on! dennis

Sounds like in addition to collecting you have been working on modern grading skills with some success.

    Congrats and Welcome.

    Welcome!!!

I don't know anything about your coins, but have 2 hints for you to make you even more image

first, that flapping bird avatar is annoying. Yes I can hit my red x button and make it stop, but will more likely skip your posts without reading them.

ah yes, your posts. You might consider hitting "enter" between a few of your sentences. this thing called a "paragraph" is usually used to separate ideas and give the reader a break to think about what you've said and find his place again.

    makes easier reading.

    with kind regards,

    oldhougie,

Don't worry about Baley's post. He's really a great guy. image He's just the only one willing to say what many of us are thinking when it comes to grammar and such. If you've been a lurker for a while, you already know what a solid contributor he is on the forum.

You're certainly correct with the first part of that sentence. The 1996 Roosevelt alone will pay for a lot of grading fees.
