Can you add an autographed card to a player registry?

Hello,

I was wondering if you can add a card to the players registry? Maybe add is the wrong word. I mean instead of inserting a graded card into a hole in your regisrty. Can you insert an authenicated, encapsulated (but not graded) card?

Thanks,
Jason

  • Yes Jason, you can add it to your set registry

    Interesting, I thought the card could only be added if it was graded. I guess you learn something new everyday. image

    I think the set Registry defaults to PSA Grade 3 for items that are deemed authentic.

    You can see this in player sets that have hand cut cards (Hostess, Post Cereal, etc.) that aren't graded. The same holds for autographed cards without a grade. Basically, anything with a cert number can be added.
  • That's an interesting question. I was under the impression that cards must hold a specific grade to be added to a registry. Thanks, tkd7 that's good info to know

    I own a reprint 1948 Bowman Basketball card signed by Arnie Risen. It is authenticated,slabbed and PSA/DNA certified for his autograph. It was not eligible for grading due to the fact that PSA does not grade reprint of this set. But I am unable to enter this card in my Basketball HOF Autograph Registry. The cert. number comes back with the following notice when I attempt to enter it.
    Cert number ******** (Cert # edited out) is not found in our list of valid certified cards.

    Please verify that you have typed in the correct certification number. If so, contact setregistry@collectors.com for assistance.

    If someone here can explain how this card can be entered on to my set please let me know.
    Thanks

    Ironically this happened to me on my 97 Legends set. I had the M. Motley graded under PSA/DNA and they made the error of just giving it an authentic grade, rather than the card grade and PSA/DNA certification. I added it to my set forgetting that it wouldn't be accepted. To my surprise it was accepted but defaulted to PSA Grade 3. I wonder what criteria PSA used to decide that the value should be 3?image

    This is straight from the PSA website.....
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Grade Points, Set Ratings and Weighting

    Set rankings are determined by the grades of the items in the set, the "weight" assigned to each item in the set, and the set's completeness. Each item within the set is assigned a item rating based on the value of the item in NM-MT condition. For example, a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle would have a much stronger rating than a 1952 Topps common and, therefore, be given more weight in evaluating the set as a whole. Most sets are broken down using a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the greatest weight. Some sets feature ultra-rare items. Those items will command a much higher weighting according to their relative rarity. If the set is very small with little variation in individual item prices, then the scale may be 1-5. Weighting for each set is viewable by clicking on the set composite link found on each set page.
    Then, using the individual item ratings, the grade of each item, the completion percentage and set size, a unique formula is created for each set in the registry. To be specific, the weighted grade point average is determined by multiplying the grade of each item listed in a set by the weight of the item. (Note that for calculation purposes a non-graded authenticated item receives a default grade of 3.) Then these totals are summed and divided by the total sum for weights of those items. The final set rating is achieved by dividing the weighted grade sum by the total sum of the weights in the entire set. Now, while this is NOT an exact science, the formula should provide an accurate evaluation of each set registered on our site. This means you can compare your prized sets to the best the hobby has to offer.

    Additionally, the following point deductions are taken for Qualifiers. For example, if your card or ticket is graded PSA 9Q, the grade calculation in the Registry will be 7.

    9Q = -2
    8Q = -2
    7Q = -2
    6Q = -2
    5Q = -2
    4Q = -2
    3Q = -1
    2Q = -1
    1Q = no deduction
  • Yeah, this "default to 3" thing seems to have snuck in without much fanfare. I remember a very cross debate here a few months back on the injustice of the previous situation. I had a few Authentic PSA/DNA autos that I wanted to add to my HOF Auto set. I was debating the merits of cracking them out and sending them in for $20 grading when Cosetta (as always) set me straight. As long as you're not worried about what it does to your GPA it's an excellent solution.

  • What if you have an "Authentic" card and want to get a PSA grade for it. What is the charge for that?
