so, after the grading class Ive determined....

HyperionHyperion Posts: 7,440 ✭✭✭

that the 4 peace dollars I purchased early in my explorations on the bay have been dipped or otherwise cleaned so as to KILL any luster at all. (I dont see hairlines, but I do dont see any luster either) ... I have 2 peaces dollars which have nice luster, and the 4 are very dull compared to the 2....

so basically Im now thinking ebay contains:
Cleaned and otherwise problem'd coins.
Coins which are overgraded in thier slabs.
Counterfeits from the orient.

Am I missing anything ?

I should be happy I didn't pay alot for them, and can at least sell them for thier silver content.

It should only take a day or two reading this forum to figure that out.

You just added a little ammo to the cause. image

Well, there ARE a lot of drab, lackluster Peace dollars.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Blame ebay ?

I've seen more dipped, cleaned, whizzed, buffed, soldered, and spurious stuff at coin shows and dealers along the way, than I have on ebay. You only have more access to the spurious dealers and low life cheats out there, now that you have a search engine bring it to you. Trust who you know and know who you trust.

Education is great, but is worthless if it isn't implemented. So with a lesson, do we quit ?
The lesson isn't that ebay is bad, the lesson should be "I've learned to SPOT a dipped or cleaned coin" or : "I've learned to ensure an ebay dealer has a liberal return policy" or.... I learned that knocking down the main store just shut down future opportunity to snipe a real GEM.

I am glad you learned , though image Happy hunting. I sell good stuff ! Raw, undipped, uncleaned , and if it turns out to be such, I'll refund the purchase price. It is an education in TRADE.
  • What years are your Peace $'s.... The 1924 has a wide range of different finishes for instance....

Ebay doesn't corner the market on cleaned coins, low-end for the grade certified coins and overgraded raw coins by any means. Just about any venue has these, whether it be magazine ads, coin shows, or other auction sites. What you are learning is that knowledge is the best defense. There are good coins, good sellers out there, on Ebay as well as elsewhere. However, without knowledge (and learning to grade is a big part of that) a buyer has to trust the seller. Not all sellers are worthy of that trust.

Not sure if all sellers are selling crap on E-Bay.

I like to think I'm selling very decent coins at decent prices.

When you don't buy crap, you don't need to sell crap!

There is crap every where you look. I'm glad you know how to tell the difference. Not everyone can.

it was hyperbole image I know there are good dealers out there, and bad...
but Im happy to have gained enough knowledge to detect more than what I could before !!!!

to quote GI Joe: Now I know...and knowing is 1/2 the battle image
  • eBay pictures can be a problem. I tend to bid fairly conservatively there, and I don't win much of what I bid on. I generally knock the grade down a full increment on raw coins. On slabbed coins, I bid as though it were sight unseen. With this strategy, I've generally done okay.

And then the exception--except when I've done business with them before and know how to interpret their pictures.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.

I have found the key to eBay success is to stick to known sellers with good return policies. Know what you are looking at or get someone that does to help you.

The rest of eBay is hit or miss, with the vast majority being "misses" -- I'm glad you learned your lesson relatively cheaply....Mike
