Olbermann and Gordon

Wow !!!! Olbermann bought the blank front Gordon for $10,000 on ebay. Adding that to his BGS 9.5 full card and the full card showing on a rack pack...must be nice. Wonder if its the same card that was on ebay ending at $150. I was thinking of bidding on that blank front auction as it was only $150 but......Now I must go kick myself.

I heard him talking today on the Dan Patrick show about how he was interested in some of the Dimaggio stuff up for auction at one of the auction houses.

    auction for $10K blank front
  • Thanks for posting link. I need to figure out how to do that. Now there is another Gordon full card on rack pack showing. Auction # 8813097162. Kinda interesting to watch this card. Wonder if it will go the same way the FFace card did.

I just added up Olbermann's Alex Gordon purchases on Ebay since April 27th (3 weeks time) and he has spent $44,900 on Alex Gordon cards alone. Wow and Wow. Got to admire the passion for the hobby.

If I had a cap of 5$ million to spend on cards, I still wouldn't have one of these cards in my collection. This guy would buy a case full of saltine crackers in the Sahara desert.

he makes 150 grand a month. his card budget is more than likely the same % as yours. he will make a lot of money off these when the time is right. he collects pre-war, this is an investment.

He spent over 50K on 1 Kalamazoo Bat last December- and I think he won the low grade California League Old Judges as well, for about 60K each.
It's all relative I guess, and he's got everything else. Must be an amazing collection.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

He has worked with Topps in the past. I would guess that he knows what Topps knows about this card. I still don't need one.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

what's up with him not leaving feedback. he seems to be able to leave negatives but that's about it.
  • He can spend (waste) that much money on these cards because he pretty much has everything you could possibly want. he has among the most complete collections in the hobby. When you have like a dollar into each of your T206 Cobbs you can overspend on alot of other cards just to try and have everything. He is also big into printing errors and such which would explain his interest in the blank front. 60k actually isnt alot for lowgrade old judge cali leaguers compared to what Terry got for his last PSA 1.

It was Tik's Ca Leaguer I was think of, didn't Olberman win it?

  • Gordon is a heckuva prospect, but I'm sure the Royals can find some way to mess with his body or his mind, to screw up his career

A similar piece sold before around $50 !!!!!!!

On ebay (sorry unable to link) there is a PSA 9.5 Gordon. PSA 9.5 ????? The pic shows a BGS 9.5 and I notified seller and he insists its a PSA 9.5 Idiot. He has 6 feedback all given yesterday all on .01 info auctions with like .10 shipping. Feedback builder stuff. He also had rack packs. 6 of them One has a Gordon in it. 1 in 6 odds of getting one. I bet his friend is bidding on one auction and mysteriously no legit buyers wil get it. No pic of rack with Gordon was even avail. I asked for the PSA or BGS serial # on his Gordon and no response. Scam. Sad that people are bidding $1000 so far and he only takes check or M.O. so no refund?

These cards are all about hype and free publicity. People rush out to wal mart to buy these boxes. They then open them and get squat from a box of cards they never would have bought in the first place. Fight the HYPE and say no to this crap.
  • And about a chance to get a few extra dollars,a rare version, and the thrill of the hunt. Though I assume all Wal -Mart boxes on shelves now are from a new run.

The Alex Gordon card has been receiving a lot of publicity in mainstream media and hobby publications. Olbermann probably is doing this so others will take note of his collection.

This is a lot like the state quarter with the rare extra leaf on the corn. eBayer paid huge money for sealed rolls and lined up at the bank. I have no idea if they sell for anything now but they got a lot of publicity. Any chance Olbermann could be in cahoots with Topps on this to drive prices and publicity? I actually saw a MLB trading card commercial the other day that was pretty cool. It showed a lot of kids opening and trading cards so that along with the Gordon have a lot of press for the hobby.

P.S.- How long before people start counterfieting th Gordon?

  • I too have seen 4 baseball card commercials in the past few weeks. First just UD,now I see UD and Topps together. My boys get excited when they see them. "Dad look, baseball cards!!! Can we go to Target and buy some?" What have I started. lol

I'm willing to bet people are already trying. Olberman bought a "white back" version of the card the other day that I really question being legit.

    Who is Rober Maris?
  • ^^Probably already being done. All you need is a dye man to eye the colors under a loop, using another card from the set and have the pix of the card you want to copy. There are a lotta printing presses out there; and a helluvalot of pressman looking to make bank like they used to back in the 80's. My pops worked on the Fleer/Pokemon presses in Raliegh-Durham back in the late 90's maybe early this decade and he lmk how much product is being made(Tractor trailers running non-stop to the cut warehouse for cutting and packaging), how the card companies secure there products(like when a new uncut sheet pops up on eBay, 9 times out of 10 its the company buying it back and firing an employee or two).
    Collecting;

Looking for Topps rookies as well.
