PL Designation - Does it have two applications?

For Morgans, PL usu. means frosty devices and mirrored fields to a certain depth. i.e. cameo.

The I seen PL Sacs & other modern coinage and notice that the entire coin is mirrored/reflective. Shouldn't the devices contrast with the fields?

NO, according to the PCGS grading guide Cameo frost has zero to do with pl fields.

morgannut2 is correct. PL and Cameo are 2 different designations. Neither is contingent on the other.

So in theory, you could have a PL Morgan without the faintest hint of frost as long as the fields are PL?

Yes, in point of fact, although there are a number of PL and DMPL MOrgans dated 1899 on, almost all have little or no frost on the devices. Let me quote Laura Sperber's recommendation to buy a DMPL made in the Coin Dealer Newsletter Jan 12, 2001: "(recommended buy) 1902-O MS65DMPL $1 Morgan: If you can stomach the appearance, this date is an awesome buy at today's levels. The 02-O is a gray DMPL (the farthest thing from a Cameo there can be). Ususally the mirrors are shallow or hazy. (But) PCGS has graded only 4 gems in DMPL, none higher. It's a scary though that for under $25,000 you can buy all of the GEM's (CDN bid is $3,300)!

Dang MorganNut Beat me to it! 4" or less = PL, 5" or more = DMPL, I think.....

Supposed to be 2" to 6" = PL. >6" = DMPL. But recently it's rumered to be 4" minimum, and 8" minimum---beware cracking out old green PCGS holdered DMPL's--You may get an upgrade, but it could drop to PL.
