Question about the PO01 Grade at Grading Services

RampageRampage Posts: 9,475 ✭✭✭✭✭
Will PCGS, NGC or ANACS grade a coin PO01, or even slab a coin, if the date is barely legible? Take, for example, an 1885 or 1886 Liberty nickel. Say the 188 is very clear, but the last digit, is only half present, but it is obvious it's a 5 or a 6. Will the services still slab them?

Thanks. Richard.

If they can't figure out what date it is, they won't slab it. Note that many coins have diagnostics beyond just the numbers to determine what date it is; if one of these methods can be used to determine the date, they'll slab it.

maybe to it depends on the coin sight seen but it is a better than average possibility for the qanswer to be yes !!

Most PO-1's can't be easily dated. They go on mint die characterists--the 1793 Chain Cent is a good example where there can be zero detail on the obverse. But for coins like Morgans you need a date, however weak, except for 1921 and some 78's. If you can distinguih an '86 from '85 nickel by the dies, then it's possible--but I don't know the series.

    They will. I have a 1890 Morgan in P01.

I remember a story about a guy that wanted a cheap, dateless, type 1 standing liberty quarter authenticated and not graded as part of a type set. He was shocked when the dateless piece came back authenticated as a 1916. True story? I don't know.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

Try putting some Nick-a-date on the date area. It will help the PCGS graders see the date. image

Yeah, that will also help the coin hop into a bodybag, too. Cute joke. image Thanks all for the reply. That 1877CC dime is something else. Thanks for posting it.
