Hypothetical - What would you do in this case...bid or no bid

Thinking of the popular game show deal or no deal.....here is bid or no bid....

Start your day off....Hypothetically

You are a coin dealer and you see a coin that you can use either for your inventory or your own collection is on ebay.....

You are going to bid it and notice that the current high bidder has bid it up way higher than it should be......

You drop him a note saying ....good luck that's a pretty strong bid......

he comes back with thanks, gives you an order for a couple of coins say $1,500 worth of business.....and then with the order says .... please dont bid against me.....

What would you do ....bid or no bid? image

I don't bid; not because of the order he placed, but because he has already run up the bid higher than I feel it should be.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Tough call. I'd be inclined to bid anyway. Even though he may not buy from you again. Obviously you have no obligation to him. I suspect that it may be ethically questionnable to not bid (or even ask you not to)

    Jon,
I am not a dealer so my response may not be in synch with your business strategy and ethics.
Your story implied that the cost of the coin was higher than it should be. I presumed from your unsolicited note to the other bidder that you were done with the coin. However if you really want to bid more send him a note that you are planning on bidding further and you are willing to return his money if the offer was predicated on your staying away from the auction.
Should the value of a new client trump your interest in the coin, so be it. Take the money, sell the coin, and look for another buying opportunity.

    That's my opinion, as well.

I got the impression he was talking about future auctions, not this auction, since you made it clear that the bidding was already beyond what you wanted to pay. If you meant just this auction, the point is kind of moot.

1st the other bidder tells the seller that you contacted him, and you get NARUed from E-Bay.. Then he doesn't have to worry about you bidding against him!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Me, too. Your mistake, hypothetically of course, was contacting the bidder. Granted, you got some business from it, but if you didn't contact him, then then there wouldn't have been any issue about bidding against a customer.

If I could bribe my competition, I would.

Do NOT bid. Not because he asked you not to bid or ordered from you, but because you precluded that to say "....going to bid it and notice that the current high bidder has bid it up way higher than it should be......

You drop him a note saying ....good luck that's a pretty strong bid...... "

If you want to pass him a note to make friends, fine. If you are dropping a note to imply his stupidity, that's not exactly friendly... but implies the bidder does't know market value. Now ask the question : DO I WANT THE COIN ?

    I think not.
Sell your stuff to him, and don't bid against him Why run the risk of losing a potential friend and customer ?

my hypothetical friends are a lot more loyal to me image
also, Jon... it could be that a guy has a folder with three missing coins and inspite of a coin's value HE WANTS THAT ONE. I've gone over retail lots of times. Not cuz I am stupid, but because I WANTED IT. I wished I could have told every one I ever bid against during the process "Please do not bid against me" image

Have a nice day everyone image
