The allure of the registry

For those of you on one or more of the registries, what draws you to use them? Is it the competition with others to vie with others for the most complete set or highest graded set? Or is it more of a way to share with others your collection?

Not that I have registered yet, but I was wondering why others do? For me, it would seem to be a start of sharing a collection I'm proud of. It kind of sucks that I have a decent amount of Pete Rose cards, but other than my family (who think I'm nuts), no one really gets to see. I have a website that I've created to showcase the cards, although I'm still busy scanning and such.

I have found more and more that it is an excellent databasing tool to track what I have in my collection-
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Sharing and databasing with a small amount of competition sprinkled in. It's nice to have a record of many of my slabbed cards in one place. My Excel spreadsheet has a record of the sets I own, but I've got nothing that shows which graded cards make up the set. Another thing that might be overlooked is the registry is pretty good proof that you own a card or a set for insurance purposes.

    Good question Kevin!! image

All of the above (except competition) plus a way to meet other collectors with similar interests, and thru the attached pop report to see what else is possible in terms of upgrades.

  • It's nice to be number 1, but I have sets on it that I'll never be at the top. They still mean alot to me. I think it's about sharing my collection with everyone. I just scanned pics of every card I have in the registry, to further the sharing.

It's also I nice way to enjoy my collection, without getting it out. Just turn on the computer and look. I can enjoy my collection anywhere know.

  • I hear you on that RalstonPurina. I've been putting together a website of my Rose cards. I've shared it with Bob and Scott (quitcrab), whom I enjoy chatting with. I'd like to get my cards graded and such, but right now, I'm lucky when I can purchase cards. But there's no "raw" site like the registry, that I've found. The registry seems to help create a comradery (camaraderie?), which is pretty cool. There's no way I could approach the top guys in the Rose mastery set. I bought most of my regular Topps issues from 83 to 90 or so, in my teens most of that. I don't plan on upgrading at this point, but I'd love to get them graded and see how I rank!

No exactly, but you can always scan your cards and build a site for them- that way you can put them in any order, any holder, or raw.
    I use www.imageevent.com
It's easy and 30. per year for 1500 images. You can password all or part of your site, and it takes minutes to build.

I would say that I participate in the registry for the databasing, meeting others and comparing my set to the others that have been listed. When you collect sets that have very low pop cards, it is interesting to see what cards are floating around in the market place that is not in someone elses set. The registry has been a wonderful addition to my collecting.

  • Right, but I was thinking more of a dedicated site for raw stuff. I'm lucky, as my buddy has server where I have around 50gb of space to use. So I've got website hosted there, at first mainly for pics of my kids for my mom to look at. Now I've started with my Rose cards. But I can't exactly give others access for them to host their pics, so Image Event and the other sites out there that host pics for you, are nice. But it's not specifically for sportscards (or non-sports cards), so the draw to them isn't the same. [sniff][sniff] I think I smell a business opportunity.

Anyway, here's the portion of my website dedicated to Pete! my site

There is another great reason for using the registry, I would imagine. If you want to have your collection insured, it is proof positive of what you own and its' condition, since no two people can claim the same exaxt card. I wonder if anyone has used the registry for this purpose?

Late 60's and early to mid 70's non-sports
  • That's another reason i use the registry. I waste no time getting stuff in, and I scan every card I have slabbed (hey I gotta lot of spare time right now). Because of this, I have a very detailed record of my collection. This is only a fraction of what I have, but it's something.

All the sets I collect right now are primarily on there for the competition. It wouldn't nearly be as fun without shooting for #1. Everytime I see someone in my category make an upgrade, it drives me to push harder.

There are other sets that I like and if I collected those, it would just be for the fun of it. For instance, I like the 59 set but I know I would never have a chance at #1 on it. Honestly, that would take half the fun out of it if I ever started a set like that. That's probably why I never started. Any set that I would have to compete against millionares, I tend to avoid at this point in my life.
  • Simple. This is group therapy. You can come here, talk about your card addiction and everybody understands. Even if they collect something different. You meet some great folks here through listing your sets and 60's FB is full of great guys, strong competition and a lot of poking fun. If any of those was missing, it wouldn't be as fun. All joking aside though, there is only one reason to be on the registry..........
that is to be Shouldabeena. Rub his nose in it. Every time I have a down day, I just pull up a few sets where my set is ahead of his. Just seeing that makes the day go better. The grass is greener. The air is fresher and the ladies at work are a little cuter. Everything else just doesn't seem to matter. So find yourself a Shouldabeena and come on in. Because in our case...... to be the 12th best 60's FB card collector, you've got to beat the 12th best 60's FB card collector.

I always read the feedback from those who participate in the registry for organization purposes, fun, comradery, etc. All great reasons to hit up the set or player registry. How about some feedback from the guys who just love the competition? • Dav,
Quite simply....... Frank and I feel sorry for you. Not only does it appear you may lose your 60 Mayrose award. YOUR award. Had it for two years. Clearly a champion set. But you are losing it "Coaster Boy". Truly a sad state of affairs. Who is consulting on your collection? Is this the Knicks management team? Certainly Brian was not involved because I know that would not have happened on his watch.
After that humiliation, we think you could use a break. Not a big. Not enough that it would be any good. But a break never the less. Use your break to build back up your self esteem which I am sure is threatened by this. While registry awards have become very expensive at this point and I am not commited to play that game at the moment, I am committed to play a whole new game this year with our FB Olympics. The plans are evil and sinsiter to say the least YOu will need your strength. But first, get the team whipped into a Mayrose frenzy and get back that award!

  • The registry offers a nice checklist and can offer a sense of completion. I have a T206 collection registered at SGC and my collection, although at 90% completion, will always be at the bttom of the resistry food chain.

I'm just glad no no one at CU collects Nate Colbert!
  • Scott,
    Welcome to the mess here.
Wanted to make sure that you know that you are not alone in your Nate fixation.
I checked your set and you have a nice one. COngratulations. Steve Dawson also lists a set. He is a big SD collector and hs tough competition in a number of the Charger sets and the SD player sets for FB. If he is on the Colbert set and it appears he is, keep a look in the rear view mirror. Something will be gaining on you. If you could distract him from FB for awhile, it would be appreciated.

I go away for a couple of days and lookie at all the fun I miss! I went out to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, to Tangier Island, where they've never heard of sportscards, PSA, or even computers for that matter. I ate lots of seafood, got in a little fishing, and even met a guy named Buba. I didn't think about cards even once ... until Buba told me that Tangier Island was purchased from an Indian Chief for 2 fur coats and some junk jewelry. That made me think about some of my card trades with Art!

So Fuzz, Now I'm "Coaster Boy", huh? image

My collection of coasters (or should I say my award winning coasters image ) are obviously still just underappreciated and misunderstood. However I'm proud to be a coaster boy! Some day, when the PSA coaster wars begin, and you come knocking on my door (with hat in hand) searching desperately for a few minty Saga, Buckman, or Crane discs ... we'll just see who has the last laugh. BooHooHaHa! image

And as for Mr. Lillo and his merry band of never ending sets ... well, lets just say that his awards envelope from PSA might be a little lighter than normal this year! I'm expecting some new grades back very soon that could sneak a few of those shiny certificates away from Jersey.

By the way, that sneaky so-n-so Neil jumped past me on the Mayrose set, so now I'm in 2nd place and Lillo has dropped to third. I've got a little som'n som'n up my sleeve for ol Neil too.

I'm also debating if I should list my other Mayrose set and knock Mr. Lillo down to fourth place and out of the Olympic medal standings all together.

  • Now this is what the board needs. Smack talk about a 40+ year old Hot Dog set that most people have never seen. That is the passion. That is the competition. That is the insanity that this has brought us all too. Good going guys and good luck for tonights awards.
Mike, So nice to have you back. Can you think of a person more deserving of the title coaster boy than you? YOu should look at this the good way. We have given you such a ration over this that none of us dare enter the land of round-ness as we know what will be heeped on us. Your coasters remain award winning and cannot be beaten. Probably makes you sleep good at night. Congrats on another set of awards this year.
ON a side note, I haven't been watching lately but did I miss something. MOSH has bought out everyone and everything in sight. I had to go to the cabinets to see if I had sold out to him as well. Apperntly Dav and I are among the few that haven't. He is WAY WAY ahead on many of the sets and it will cost a fortune to catch him from someone who isn't spread thin. Good Luck to whomever.
    Lastly,
Congrats to our buddy Wolfbear who according to my quick checks will be the ONLY five time winner on a major set in 60's FB. His 62 Fleer is a thing of beauty despite my lack of help. Take 'em to your grave Wolf.

Since nearmint has outbid me on every 10 that's come up lately,
I'd like to thank him for not updating his set. He could probably be # 1 by now in 1962 Fleer.

Also, it appears that whoever it was that paid 3 times SMR
for Paul Lemm's 2nd All-time finest 62 Fleer set in the May 2005 Mile High auction still hasn't re-registered it. SANDBAGGER!

As to the set that honors maybe the most awesome football team to ever take the field,
not to mention honoring probably the only food besides Spam in which one can ingest pig bowels and snouts in the same mouthful :

1960 Cardinals Mayrose Franks All-Time Finest

    1 Davalillo .......... 9.82
    1 Shouldabeena ........ 9.82
    3 Neil's ............ 9.36
    4 MastroNet .......... 9.00
    5 Museum of Sports History ... 8.73

Looks like it ended up in a tie for 1st in this set. Do you guys each get one half of the certificate?

Joe likes Dav the best since his set is listed first, so my guess is that he ends up with the bigger half of the cert. image
