"The wild confrontation began when the seven-time NL MVP led off the fifth inning. Springer's first pitch sailed behind Bonds' back, drawing a warning from plate umpire Joe West.
The next four pitches all came inside, including one that hit Bonds' bat handle on the third delivery for strike one. On the fifth pitch, Springer hit Bonds in the right shoulder as he turned to protect himself.
That's when Springer and manager Phil Garner got ejected -- and the Houston crowd of 35,286 gave the pitcher a standing ovation."
I love it...giving Bonds exactly what he deserves - no respect.

I just watched it. Bonds, while still a douchebag, showed some class by not going out there and beating the tar out of Springer.
Throwing at him, behind him, and hitting him doesn't show much class IMO.
However, the pitchers I have the most respect for earn that respect by getting batters out - not by plunking them purposefully.
Pitchers also earn respect from me by defending themselves when players charge the mound [a la Robin Venture and Nolan Ryan].
What Springer did - although applauded by many, does not make me respect him.

Well said Mike Schmidt. I agree.
Bonds has disgraced the game with his cheating ways, and I hope to see more pitchers take out their frustration at Bonds' cheating in the same way.
If someone wants to truly disrespect Bonds, don't throw at him. Give him a nice Eephus (sp) pitch, so his highlight will always be remembered that way - a total joke. Someone mentioned that somewhere else, and I fully agree.

Neal: that was my suggestion on another forum ;-)

Well STATED!!
Gee, here's an idea - How about striking him out on 3 consecutive pitches. Oh wait, that makes too much sense.

It seems as though Springer wanted to provoke him and make him look like a crazy man charging the mound. Bonds showed a lot of class by not charging the mound and making a complete utter fool of himself. Bonds haters would have loved to see him get violent and use that as fuel for even more Bonds hatred.
I am not a Bonds fan by any means. You guys know I am a Mattingly and Abbott fan, guys with a lot of class, respect and dignity.

Good show, Russ, good show.

who is more of a discrace ? to me springer is.........it is the only way he will be on sportscenter and everybody talking about him. bonds has NO class but has twice as much as springer and the houston fans that were at the game.
i hear all this crap about how bonds is setting a bad example for kids........but the parents stand up and cheers when a pitcher throws at bonds.........great american values
If he insists on crowding the plate that much, he should be hitting the dust at least once per at bat and that is well withing the pitchers right. The no 'real' inside pitching allowed, coupled with the body armor, is one of the many reasons for the increase in prodigous offense. Steroids is only part of the equation, with many other factors for the increased offense.
If his chin is six inches off the plate, then a pitcher has every right to try and nibble six inches off the plate. If his chin happens to be in the pitchers domain, then Barry either has to do some math, or stand his ground. Or he can take off the armor and not think he is entitled to every inch of the plate.
In summation, without any regard to any steroid implications, the pitchers should be doing exactly what is their right. Barry should know this, and if he gets hit as a result, then he shouldn't be charging the mound...HE SHOULD GET BACK UP AND DO DAMAGE BY HITTING THE BALL!

i sure every major leaguer with bonds numbers (5 hr) hasn't had a hit since elvis is getting walked 2 times a game, intentional walks when a man is on second. i say their right is to pitch to him if he gets 714 or 715 who gives a rats ass anyway. i would do it just so i could watch sportscenter again.
