Russ Springer is my new favorite pitcher

AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
"The wild confrontation began when the seven-time NL MVP led off the fifth inning. Springer's first pitch sailed behind Bonds' back, drawing a warning from plate umpire Joe West.

The next four pitches all came inside, including one that hit Bonds' bat handle on the third delivery for strike one. On the fifth pitch, Springer hit Bonds in the right shoulder as he turned to protect himself.

That's when Springer and manager Phil Garner got ejected -- and the Houston crowd of 35,286 gave the pitcher a standing ovation."

I love it...giving Bonds exactly what he deserves - no respect.

Axtel I ussually agree with you on the boards here but not here. Bonds does not deserve that. Springer is lucky Bonds took it like a man and didn't Bit ch slap him.

That is how many of us here feel about you Prof Axhole. NO RESPECT.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • TAKE IT LIKE A MAN What a laugher!!!!!. If Bonds was a man he would have rushed the mound bat in hand. Maybe he's worried he would be out there by himself...the only bench clearing would be Houston's. Did you notice that SF didn't retaliate. What a joke this whole thing has become. By the way the only "Bit*h slapping " Bonds does is when he puts on his aftershave.

you can view the entire at bat on ESPN.com

I just watched it. Bonds, while still a douchebag, showed some class by not going out there and beating the tar out of Springer.

Throwing at him, behind him, and hitting him doesn't show much class IMO.

I hate Bonds, I absolutely do, and have for a long time.

However, the pitchers I have the most respect for earn that respect by getting batters out - not by plunking them purposefully.

Pitchers also earn respect from me by defending themselves when players charge the mound [a la Robin Venture and Nolan Ryan].

What Springer did - although applauded by many, does not make me respect him.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Well said Mike Schmidt. I agree.

He did what many in MLB want to do - simply for the disgrace Bonds has brought to the game...and the ovation he got from the crowd shows fans feel the same way.

Bonds has disgraced the game with his cheating ways, and I hope to see more pitchers take out their frustration at Bonds' cheating in the same way.

If it had been the Philadelphia crowd giving a standing O, you would be singing a different tune ...

If someone wants to truly disrespect Bonds, don't throw at him. Give him a nice Eephus (sp) pitch, so his highlight will always be remembered that way - a total joke. Someone mentioned that somewhere else, and I fully agree.

Axtell - your comments are stupid and unwarranted. Springer is a puzzy. Oh wow, he hit a batter. That takes real talent and he only took 5 pitches to do it.

Gee, here's an idea - How about striking him out on 3 consecutive pitches. Oh wait, that makes too much sense.

I HATE Barry Bonds. But nobody deserves to stand there in the box KNOWING that you are getting thrown at. One pitch behind him, one pitch off of his bat handle, another at his knees, and then PLUNK. What Springer was NOT doing was playing baseball. Also, as much as I hate him, Bonds has never had the history of charging the mound and going crazy. The last thing the true Bonds hater wants is for idiotic stuff like this to happen. It will do nothing but make Bonds the victim and turn the fence sitters into supporters of the all time great cheater.

It does not sound like Springer was retaliating because a Giants pitcher plucked one batter from Houston. He did this out of his own (and manager's?) decision. That's not playing baseball--that's a cheap shot. Batters are very vulnerable if a pitcher turns into a headhunter. Serious injuries could result. What will it prove in the end? NOTHING! The majority of fans do not like Bonds' personality and that's fine. But to actively try and hurt him or wish that on him is just plain scornful.

It seems as though Springer wanted to provoke him and make him look like a crazy man charging the mound. Bonds showed a lot of class by not charging the mound and making a complete utter fool of himself. Bonds haters would have loved to see him get violent and use that as fuel for even more Bonds hatred.

I am not a Bonds fan by any means. You guys know I am a Mattingly and Abbott fan, guys with a lot of class, respect and dignity.

Please, Bonds is vulnerable? How is that possible when he's wearing that god forsaken body armor.

    Good show, Russ, good show.

Since it was the NL, I guess when Russ came out to bat he could have been smashed in the head, but he got ejected. Maybe they should have left him in to see what a real man would do if INTENTIONALY hit with a pitch, bit&h

who is more of a discrace ? to me springer is.........it is the only way he will be on sportscenter and everybody talking about him. bonds has NO class but has twice as much as springer and the houston fans that were at the game.

i hear all this crap about how bonds is setting a bad example for kids........but the parents stand up and cheers when a pitcher throws at bonds.........great american valuesimage

The whole thing is ridiculas. Bonds is the posterchild for hatred in MLB talk, people would be the same way if it was Giambi, Palmeiro, ect.. ect.. if one of those juiceheads were approaching the Babe, but juice included he is just a better ballplayer than everyone else that juiced including McGwire. Cheering for a pro to be hurt or injured is just bad anyway you look at it. I personally am sick and tired of the talk that includes a career ending injury or now people promoting for him to get knocked out of a game for getting hit by a pitch. I think him passing the Babe with an asterick is something that will bother him for the rest of his life and that is punishment enough.

I despise Bonds*, but Springer should have been a man and pitched to him. I would have taken Bonds on. If I get him out it's a great memory for me (ie I stood up to the steroids addict and beat him). If I lose I get mentioned in the history books and nobody cares anyway because they know what Bonds* is.
  • An intent to hurt isn't noble, however, with Bonds wearing the body armor AND absolutely crowding the plate, he should get pitched in much more than he does.

If he insists on crowding the plate that much, he should be hitting the dust at least once per at bat and that is well withing the pitchers right. The no 'real' inside pitching allowed, coupled with the body armor, is one of the many reasons for the increase in prodigous offense. Steroids is only part of the equation, with many other factors for the increased offense.

If his chin is six inches off the plate, then a pitcher has every right to try and nibble six inches off the plate. If his chin happens to be in the pitchers domain, then Barry either has to do some math, or stand his ground. Or he can take off the armor and not think he is entitled to every inch of the plate.

In summation, without any regard to any steroid implications, the pitchers should be doing exactly what is their right. Barry should know this, and if he gets hit as a result, then he shouldn't be charging the mound...HE SHOULD GET BACK UP AND DO DAMAGE BY HITTING THE BALL!

i sure every major leaguer with bonds numbers (5 hr) hasn't had a hit since elvis is getting walked 2 times a game, intentional walks when a man is on second. i say their right is to pitch to him if he gets 714 or 715 who gives a rats ass anyway. i would do it just so i could watch sportscenter again.
