Where do I start?

Hi,

I am totally new at this and would like to know where to get started. I have always liked coins and enjoyed collecting unusual and old coins. I used to have a nice collection but it was stolen. Anyway, the other day I in my change from a bill I paid was a nice mercury dime. It looks to me to be in excellent condition. Its date is 1943 and there appears to be a small "w" on the face. I saw other coins like this one on eBay that varied greatly in price, but I could not from the descriptions gather anything that would indicate why.

If anyone here has any suggestions or links I would be most appreciative. Also, if there is an easy way to attach pictures to a post I can do that.

Nice find regarding the Mercury Dime. The w is the initials of the guy who designed the coin. The value is dependent on the grade. Here is a link to a crude grading guide for Mercury dimes . Link

If you want to collect mercs then you can just go ahead and buy a folder (album for higher grades). If you're
not certain what you want to collect then buy a Redbook or go to a shop and see what catches your eye.

Welcome here. What you may want to do is look up coin shows on the internet. If there are any in your area, go to a few. Even if you don't buy anything, you will be able to see lots of coins and pending on the coin show, there may be magazines, books, coin albums, etc.
If no coin shows in your area, just check out all the forums here. Lots and lots and lots of info.

Oh yeah you wondered where to start. I suggest you go to a bank and buy a $50 bag of cents and start going through them. But first get a Red Book so you will know what your looking for.

I'm not a mercury guy but have a couple for a type set. Most likely the one you have is a nice novelty. I would look at spending $40-50 on a nice PCGS graded MS65 example if you like this series.
