I knew I was going to be in the area of his shop, so I decided to stop on by today to see just how good, "Good Ole Tom" was. I brought with me a 1836 50c AU 53 Reeded Edge Half in PCGS plastic.
I browsed around his store for a bit to find some junk silver and scrubbed Morgans. He asked me if I was interested in anything and I told him that I was looking to sell my coin. I concocted a story to make it look as if I had no idea about the value of the piece.
His offer for the piece was $600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told him that I would think about it. Then the offer went to $1,000. That is when I left.
It is really an awakening as to the amount of people that he probably rips off in a year. It makes me sick to think about!

BTW, any Nutmeggers ever been to Vernon Coin to buy any proof set envelopes? I actually tried to find the place one day, but got lost in the Rockville section of Vernon.
<< <i>who is this dirtbag you speak of?

Website?? I think good 'ol Tom still uses an adding machine with a ticker-tape. His commercials are those cheezy locally produced ones that Cox Cable does.

I don't venture away from the Gold Coast.

Well, it certainly is not worth the trip from there -- in fact, it was not worth the trip for me (1 mile from work)!

Now, maybe we are being too hard on Tom . . . . . . perhaps he thought it was as common as the 1837, and gave you a "type coin" offer.
<< <i>I went there about a year ago. He was paying some sap 2.5x face for some Mercury dimes when I was there. As Chabot said, nothing but cleaned crap in their display cases. Wonder what he does with the good stuff -- probably wholesales it to "real" dealers.

I buy supplies off their web site all the time. Decent variety of stuff, and fast, reasonable shipping.

Oh, so it's you, huh?
<< <i>I'm dying to see that commercial. I'm in CT. What station runs it? >>
The Hartford stations (I think it is on Channel 3 the most). Also the local cable company (Cox) runs his ads when they do local cable commercial cut-ins. You guys in Fairfield Countly might just get the New York crap.

I've seen the commercial here in Faifield County. I think I saw it on one of the country stations (i.e., a Hartford station).
