Shop at Home TV is folding

Is this the one that sells coins? They all look the same to me.
The long-struggling Shop At Home Network, the television broadcast filmed in Nashville, is going dark.
The E.W. Scripps Co., which began investing in the network four years ago, announced this morning it would cease operations for both the television programming and Web site June 22, amid ongoing operating losses and the lack of a suitable buyer.
The network has 660 full-time employees in Nashville. A Scripps spokesman had earlier given a smaller number for the size of the Nashville workforce. The company said employees would get severance packages and career transition services.
Cincinnati-based Scripps had announced earlier that it was shopping the network, looking for a buyer.
“This is not the outcome we had hoped for when we acquired Shop At Home nearly four years ago,” Kenneth W. Lowe, president and chief executive officer for Scripps, said in a statement. “Despite the best efforts and fine work of many dedicated people, Shop At Home was unable to surmount some fundamental weaknesses that have blocked its path to profitability. I’d like to extend my deepest thanks to all of those who did their best to make this idea work.”
In previous statements, company officials had cited difficulty reaching the homes of Americans for the fourth-ranked home shopping TV network, which goes up against top-ranked QVC and other home shopping television outlets.
The company also said the path to profitability was taking longer than expected.
The E.W. Scripps Co. bought Nashville-based Shop At Home Inc. from shareholders in two transactions valued at $285 million, starting four years ago. It bought complete control of the network two years ago.
The network was operating at a loss when Scripps bought it, and it continued to lose money. Shop At Home has lost $84 million during the last four years.
Executives said five Shop At Home-affiliated television stations would be sold and that programming alternatives were being explored. Those stations are in the San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, Bridgeport, Conn., and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. markets. They reach about 5 million households.

It looks like we are now doomed to watching that Jimmy Gerstel guy on Tuesday and Saturday nights for our Coin Laughs. I will have to reset my Tivo when the end comes.
The next bunch i would love to see go under is HSN and Americas Store Talk about selling crap.

<< <i>The fact of the matter is many of the people who posted in this thread if givin the opprotunity would sell coins at those levels if they had the buyers for it. Just cuz you can get 30 for a common circ morgan does not make you a crook. If they buyers are buying them then sell them! Now it may not be morally right, but the greed factor kicks in for alot of us. I know for one if I could sell my stuff at really good prices, like they get I would be inclined to try my luck at it. I know some shops will not even buy paper money since thats what thier clients ask for and then some pay 90% of market value to get bills. Every market is different, and so are prices on coins. >>
Sure, I would love to sell at the prices they do. Difference is that I don't hype stuff the way they do. That makes for all the difference in the world, to me at least. I also wouldn't feel good selling to the uninformed at some of their price levels (ie.....still being sold by the USMint proof sets for 50%+ over the Mint's price).

state of the economy etc.
People are not springing for the credit card for spur of the moment impulse buying like they used to. Just my opinion.
<< <i>I think people are watching their money more closely these days with gas prices and overall uneasiness about the

And a good opinion it is, I have a few friends that are in a hurry to pay down there debt right now and get out from under the high rates they are paying.
Debt is bad, credit card debt is very bad. If you can't pay for it when the bill comes then don't buy it.

<< <i>Shop At Home going off the air will be music to the ears of Jimmy Gerstel "Treasure Hunter" Dish Network. Example 1999 Clad Proof set only $139.00----OUCH >>
When Gerstel first hit the air his prices were very low and under all the shopping networks, but now he is in the clouds like the rest of them but he puts on a good show with his on the air antics are good for laughs, and when he teams up with that Barry Chaptel guy, it's a comedy act and a good old fashioned board walk sales pitchman routine. Not $500 not $400 not $300 not $200 Not even $250
Now they have that Laura girl doing the late night stuff and man can she talk non stop.

They probably realized they could get more by selling them on eBay and cutting the cost of the employees payroll.

I have to admit I like watching Mike....
I found Chambers and his sidekick somewhat disturbing, but that's just me. At least I can immediately peg Mike for what he is...a snake oil salesman. I find him to be much slicker and more likeable and unless you pick up on some of his wordsmithing you'd never know that he's selling you stuff that's waaaay overpriced and not rare at all.
Nevertheless I find both shows to be highly entertaining and I marvel at the sales numbers. These guys are living proof that PT Barnum was absolutely right.
