'64 Proof set - Pointed Tail 9? explain please

***1964 Proof Set With Accented Hair Kennedy And Pointed Tail 9 - Original Cellophane - Replacement Envelope***

Just browsing some coin sites. OK shut up, I know I'm suppose to be working. Just a quick question and then right back to work, I promise.

I know what an AH is but what does the "Pointed Tail 9" refer to?

It's the dime. The tail of the 9 is pointed. This dime is always part of an accented hair proof set.

Never seen one without it. Maybe Russ has, but I haven't!

It's really not rare, except in DCAM.

I have one of those image
AH and pointed 9 in the same proof set. Picked it up, unattributed, for $12 at Feb'05 Long Beach show.

As Sego noted, the tail is pointed. These were early production coins that used the same 9 as previous years, (if you check a 1962 or 1963 dime, you'll find it's pointed). They retooled to create the blunt 9. Since the pointed 9's are early production and the Accented Hairs are early production, this is why they are almost always found together. I say "almost" always because while every pointed 9 set I've seen has contained an AH, I have found AH sets that had a blunt 9. Thus, I believe that the retooled dime die was put in to service before the Kennedy was switched to ODV-002.

PS: I think NGC has graded 4 in PF69UCAM, two of which originally came from me.

and the other two came from me.

All AH proof sets have pointed 9 dimes, But a pointed 9 dime also comes in non-AH sets.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

This link shows a picture of the pointed nine and blunt nine.

  • That is a good photo of the pointed and blunt 9. I have some on my website but I need better close up photographs.

I made the first pointed 9 dime with Russ's coin. Sometimes it pays to buy raw coins on eBay. image Marty just had to have one too. Many of the PF 68 Ultra Cams are from him too. image

You and Russ need to get your stories straight....

    Russ says:

    Marty says:

The 2 statements do not equate......

I might be wrong. But I have gotten pointed 9 dimes in NON-AH sets. I only look at the dime if it has UCAM potential. So I would go with Russ's answer.

  • Marty: You are persistent! You find lots of good stuff. I should follow your example and get out more, look around, smell the roses, check out the junk boxes and pawn shops, that kind of thing. image

I think the last time we compared notes on finding 1964 pointed nine dimes some were found in proof sets without accent hair JFKs and some AH proof sets didn't have pointed nine dimes. However they were most often found together. So I guess I have to agree with Russ too.

I recently sold a few "pointed 9" sets that were not AH.
