Black Star
From Robert Edward Auctions:
Extremely rare example of the 1952 Topps "Black Star" printing variation of Frank Campos, Washington. While the formal name of this card may sound like a chase card to a Star Wars set, this variation card is truly one of the great rarities of all modern cards. It is so rare that it is virtually unknown, is currently only checklisted by Beckett (who does not provide a value, citing its extreme rarity) and is not yet even listed in The Standard Catalog. This card was issued with a "Black Star" overprint on the reverse. To be clear, one of the three red stars on the reverse has a black ink overprint over the red star. This is by far the rarest of all 1952 Topps variations.
wow tkd7, you are quick with the gun. i just posted that 4 minutes ago and you already have the rea link posted here. so with the juice, that sgc 30/2 was $4600+.
Glad I could get you some info.

that $4000 SGC card appears to have a massive stain on the top right portion of the card.... wow!
that being said, i would imagine your card fetching more than $4000?

<< <i>Was the dealer you bought the card from aware of the scarcity of the black star '52 topps? and if you don't mind telling, how much did you pay for it? >>
I could see this fetching in the $8,000-$10,000 neighborhood in a Mastro auction.
Nice pick-up!
i have a psa3 mantle which a long term customer wanted and while we were discussing price, he decided that he wanted me to put together a set for him. the goal was to be in the condition of (4-6) range with the psa3 mantle. he made mention of the campos rarity and for me to try to acquire it. we settled on a price and i got a small deposit. well fastforward to now and he ended up backing out. now those of you who know me, know that i sell closeout wax for the most part. i have 2 warehouse just jam packed. i havent sold anything in 2006 so i could reorganize, but i will be selling again soon. anyway, i figured i would spend some time doing this set for my customer. now with upgrading, i am fairly close to a second set. i actually just picked up that mantle psa4 today, as my psa 3 doesnt fit the 1st set. i'll tell you, you actually start to feel these purchases! to see what i paid for the mantle psa4 just look at my completed ebay purchases. that wasnt the only card in the deal either. those larger deals i do in person as i wont take chances. anyway, so i did a ton of research on the 1952 set myself and found out all the info i could about that black star campos. i saw the sgc 30-2 in the rea auction sold for $4600+ with the juice so i figured to definatley keep an eye out. i wont say what i paid for it, but i have no problem paying strong for an item i want/need. to me the best part of the story is that after my customer backed out of the deal, is that i wont sell him the campos now either. goes to show that you should always keep your part of the deal! if he had kept his part of the deal, i would have sold him this card.

<< <i>Great pickup. Seems like PSA had to wait for SGC to formally recognize this variation before they would as well.... >>
Now that, was a great response! Kudos mikeschmidt!
I have been looking for one those off and on for a couple years now. Last time I saw one, my checkbook was a little light so I had to pass. Been Kicking myself still to this day for passing it up.
Great find
