Received -- New Purchase: 1666 PCGS AU-55 Salzburg Thaler (D-3505) - Guidobald

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here's a new purchase that I made this evening from the dark side, for which I'd like to get some expert opinons. In my opinion, the coin appeared to be high quality for an AU-55.

I took a bit of risk, as I am not too familiar with these coins, although it looked very appealing especially for the price offered.

Stuart, I didn't know you were of the darkside persuasion image,

sorry I can't be of any help with info about the coin, but I do like it, if for nothing else then the fact that

it's over 400 years old and from my fav part of the world.

    Nice pick up, image

I think it was a good buy. I had my eye on it myself. Similar slabbed salzburg talers of the same design have gone for $250 in EF.

    Stuart,
    Nice pick-up image
    and
don'y worry about the price..... you did good. I follow a lot of European auctions and the price you paid is well within the prices realized over there (You have to consider conversion of EURO to US and TPG cost)

I like it and the price was right but is it just me or is that spot on the obverse at 9:00 look like a mount may have been removed. Then again, there is no corresponding spot on the reverse. Besides, PCGS slabbed it and they never are wrong.

I received this beautiful coin today, and am really pleased with it. This coin has much more original mint luster in person than shown in the original scanned images. image

The obverse appears mint state with lots of glossy mint luster underlying a light layer brown steely blue toning, especially in the protected areas of the fields, between the peripheral lettering.

The reverse appears a strong AU-55 to 58 with only a touch of light wear apparent only in the center (slightly convex portion) on the highest points, with lots of glossy mint luster.

In my opinion, they graded this conservatively -- for a 340 year old coin it appears really close to AU-58 to me!! image
