GIES: New unique WWI Birth Medal Pattern

L. GIES, Birth Medal Pattern, No Date, Cast Bronze, 57.5mm., UNIQUE, Ernsting WVZ80, Frankenhuis 1108.

Obverse: A new-born infant in a cradle; from the top a sword is suspended; on the side a star radiate. In border, "Geboren im Jahre d. Weltkrieges" (Born in the year of the world war).

Reverse: A blank tablet for the name of the infant, surrounded by a laurel wreath and stars.

There are six known bronze copies of this medal. Museums in Berlin, Brussels, Hamburg, and Paris each have one in their possession and there are two others in private collections. These six examples are ALL foundry edge-punched with “C.POELLATH SCHROBENH”. My example does not have the foundry edge-punch thus indicating that it was Gies’ original piece, or pattern.

One example of this medal can also be found in iron at the British Museum, London.
