Sutcliffe interview

I didn't see it but read about it. Anyone know the details of what happened?

He's not drunk, he's just drinking.
  • Have you seen the Cubs play lately? If so, you would knock down a few cases of Old Style, too.

I think it's kind of sad when it becomes national news that a guy has a couple pops and gets a little out of line in front of the microphone. He was drunk, a condition that probably all of us have been in at some time or another, and as a result he lost his composure. Big deal.
  • Thanks Kuhlmann!

Seems kind of a bad rap on Sut.

It's not like he was supposed to be on TV like Joe 'I wanna kiss you' Namath...he had a few too many, big deal.

Did this become a big issue ? I didnt hear anything about it till now, but I dont see the big deal. He wasnt supposed to be there, he wasnt working, so why should he be apologizing for anything ? The guys who were working should be the ones apologizing if anything for bringing him on like that. Besides, like Boo said, we have all been at the LEAST that drunk. Sounded like he was having some happy-go-lucky fun and a few drinks at a ballgame.

Fine - I don't think it's a big deal. But, it's not a non-story either. Remember, kids watch these games and look up to the ball players. They should be good role models and not appear on T.V. drunk. My opinion anyway.

Jersey, I see your point regarding children, although I disagree with the role model thing. I think the parents should be the childs role model. Way too often parents leave that job up to anyone but themselves. It is the easy way out, and when the child screws up they dont have to look in the mirror, they can just pass it off on the so called role models. A parent who teaches their child that these athletes, actors, etc are not role models and accepts responsibilty for that job themselves should be well prepared in how to deal with a situation like the Sutcliffe one when it arises. If the child looks up to the parent then he or she will walk away with an entirely different outlook and conclusion after seeing something like that. Instead of being confused, hurt, or disenchanted that their celebrity role model didnt live up to expectations the child will write it off for what it is and be well grounded knowing their mother or father provides them with all the positive example they need.

  • Well - maybe "role model" is too strong a term. It's more like the specific behavior itself is made more acceptable. Kind of like when (years ago anyway), you'd see actors and actresses smoking and that became cool. The way it is now (although less I think) with drugs. I'll probably regret bringing this whole subject up because it can become political and emotional but what the heck.

I think we can all agree that it isnt exactly the best thing for a child to see, but anyone who is going to complain about Sutcliffe negatively affecting their child better make sure first that the child doesnt watch anything but public access television, because you cant turn a channel without seeing something alot worse than that. You also would have to block about 99.99% of the internet from the child. And oh, forget video games, because they are much worse in most instances.

Not trying to pick a fight here or say that anyones point has no merit, but it still comes down to responsibility of the parents. Television, video games and the internet have been accepted by parents in this country today as our childrens babysitters, educators, and scape goats when things go awry. Parents need to step up and stop blaming these outlets for their own laziness and shortcomings.
