Cracked a 1990 Topps BB Factory Set - SCANS ADDED!

(Ok, so I was bored) I was surprised at how sharp the corners were. Unfortunately most cards were off center t/b to some degree. However, I felt that atleast 50% of the set met the standards for a nine but I could only find three cards that I thought were worthy of a 10. See my scan below. I'll drop these three in my next submission and see how they fare.

Any thoughts?

Even if they get 10s...what's the FMV of a topps frank robinson card? Is it economical to submit those cards?

  • Duner, not really worried about the cost, I'm doing it for fun not for profit. I would imagine though, that a 10 would pay for grading fees.
  • For what its worth i saw a PSA 10 Willie Mcgee go off for $25 the other night.

  • Well I finally got the cards back from PSA today. For a change I guessed right!

I decided not to send the Frank Robinson card. It had some corner issues under magnification.

Nothing looks more unnatural than Frank Robinson with a smile.

I agree, it is like someone is holding a gun to his head saying smile for the camera.

It reminds me of a run of episodes of Conan O'Brien where they would show clips of Mr. T laughing from some outtakes of some skit they were doing. For some reason it cracked Conan up to see Mr. T laughing.

It's ashame not enough people realize that 1990 Topps are among the hardest to find post-war baseball cards in existence, especially in ultra high grade. Back in 1990, most kids bought their cards to play with and not many people knew they would ever appreciate in value. I would rate 1990 Topps with some of the all-time hardest to complete sets like 1912 Boston Garters, high grade T-204s, N167s and 1988 Donruss.

Take a look at the PSA pop report. The extremely low numbers speak for themselves. While 1952 Topps can be found all over the place (more than 85,000 graded thus far by PSA), PSA has only graded 30,000 1990 Topps so far. The numbers speak for themselves! image

I think the pop#s are so low due to not many people are sending in cards that sell for under a dollar. Great cards though. They just produced WAY too many. You can still pick up cases real cheap. On ebay now item # 8827353052 3 box sealed rack case under $50 shipped. The 1988 Donruss have major centering issues, but in a $50 case you can find a few 10's I would assume. I buy many 89 Fleer rack cases for FF versions and find a few possible 10's but I have no interest in submitting or keeping them. I would not compare 88 Donruss or 90 Topps to high grade t-204 or similar. Just my opinion.

  • This is an awesome story and one that makes me respect the person even more after I received my 1st grades. What a great eye to pull 3 cards of out the box and send in 2 of them in for grades and BAM sure enough both 10's

    Impressive stuff my friend, impressive

  • I agree the main reason the pop reports are different is due to the fact that many collectors will not send in cards from these sets. I am sure in time the numbers will far outweigh those of the 52's etc.

Face it the majority of the 1952s that are in high grades are already graded. There are still thousands of cases of 1990 Topps sitting back unopened.
  • I think the post comparing them to 52's and the smile face were meant in sarcasm

    congrats on the great grades
Looking for additions or upgrades to my Graig Nettles master player set on the registry.
  • oh. I didn't catch that. Just want to make sure kids dont start buying those hoping to retire later. As I did. lol
