B.J. Ryan - What does everyone think of him?

I was skeptical about my Jays spending the kind of money they did for this guy, but so far he has been out of this world (knock on wood). The only run that has been scored off this guy this season was when the baserunner "stoled" second and third on catcher's indifference and then plated on a sac fly.

His pitching line:

Games: 15
Innings Pitched: 16
Hits Allowed: 6
Strikeouts: 18
ERA: 0.54

  • I have to agree with you, the guy is unreal. I was very skeptical as well, but it certainly doesn't seem they wasted money here (Burnett may turn out to be another story).
It's funny, I've been a life-long Spos fan but being here in Toronto the team is starting to win me over. Maybe more of a "cheer for the underdog" sort of thing, but I've already got tickets to see the Spankies and Mets, so here's hoping.

He's a top reliever, one of the best in baseball in my opinion. You need a guy like that at the back of the bullpen to even think about winning in the postseason, so I think the Jays made a great move in signing him. I wonder how much Burnett will pitch this season?

Relievers are cut from a different mold. Pressure, injuries, mindset, etc, contribute to some major premature failures. From what I've seen so far, the kid has some pretty nasty stuff, but its a long year.....
  • As a Yankee fan, I was upset when the Jays signed Ryan. He is only going to get better.

On a side note, I was ecstatic when they signed Burnett as it meant the Yankees wouldn't have another oft injured pitcher on their hands. When Burnett is healthy they say he has great stuff. I just don't think he's ever been healthy...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

The Jays think Burnett is ready to pitch now, they think he is paranoid about his elbow. B.J Ryan is a STUD and will help that Blue Jay team out but not enough to pass the Red Sox in the division.

I wish the Indians had signed Ryan instead of the Blue Jays. What's going on here in Cleveland just shows you how important relief pitching, or in the Indians case, lack of relief pitching is.....other than Wickman nobody can get anyone out it seems.....

Another scoreless inning for B.J. today. Sure beats having Miguel Batista closing games.

The word is that Burnett is going to come back in June now. It's amazing how well the Jays have done considering they have no wins from Burnett and just got their first win from Josh Towers (their No. 5 guy) today. I love watching this club. They might not be better than the Yankees or Red Sox, but hey, there is buzz around baseball in the Toronto area that hasn't been around for years.

    BJ Ryan is a stud

writer, it has not been that long since Joe Carter's Jays! I remember how good that team was. They were the model franchise in baseball for a period of close to five years! Don't forget that! Only Yankee fans are not allowed to remember anything good for more than 24 hours before it is ancient history image

    soft,

I'll never forget the Joe Carter HR. I know how fortunate I am to have seen my team win two World Series championships in my lifetime. I can already die happy. It is nice to see them playing some exciting baseball though. If they can get Burnett back and he can be effective, who knows? The team seems to have a little bit of depth this year compared to other recent years.

My dad grew up a Yankees fan and I have always respected the franchise. I've still got my Don Mattingly shirt somewhere in my closet. I'm hoping the East is a three-team race this year.
