This is certainly not intentded to be a shot at Jim in anyway but his was the first and really that only name that popped into my head when I saw what was happening. Jim has a top notch collecction and seems a fine, generous man from all my interactions with him.
Also we are the only two that I no of that plan their "collecting goals" and I assume that means we have spent to much time in corporate America. I wonder if any of you others out there do this? Jim is on a calendar year so it would appear and I am on a fiscal year based on the set registry awards.
So I was sitting down a couple of days ago going over what I want to accomplish prior to the 2007 awards. I listed all the sets that I have reasonable holdings of that I will continue to build upon this year. For each I list what my goals are in terms of GPA, set completion %, rankings, etc. It helps during the year to avoid the dreaded "upgrade trap" when you spend all your time and money chasing upgrades and not working on the stuff you started out on. I noticed after a while that I had finished the list and it had consumed several sheets of paper. I counted the list and there are more than 125 sets for this year. I immediately thought of Jim and the "quest for 100"! I knew the collection had been expanding but this seems a bit much to me (not to Jim maybe). Then sadly enough I thought about how many more sets that I have started that aren't on this list and how many more I would like to start but haven't gotten around too.
Is there counselling for this? Does anyone else plan out this stuff? Is anyone else this out of control?

1. Probably 2. Absolutely 3. Only on days ending in y
I write down goals every year. Some I hit, others I exceed, some fall short. Overall the only goal I don't hit is the one to spend less on my collection.
Jim's plan of working on a lot of sets across many eras, so as to avoid one set being "hot" and being temporarily expensive has saved me a lot of money and even more aggravation. Everything seems cyclical, so having alternate plans helps a lot.
Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's
<< <i>Is this why everyone fears the Fuzz?
In a word Griff YES
The fuzz is a man you dont want to run into when your doing a set. With that said he is also on the top of my list for class acts
D.R. has a passion for collecting that can not be rivaled by anyone. Kind of like trying to get past Butkas on 4th and 1
When ever i hear the words fear the fuzz it reminds me of what Yamamoto said right before Japan attacked Pearl
I FEAR WE AWAKEN A SLEEPING GIANT
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH please dont wake the FUZZ

Ha--I feel your pain--believe me it never gets easier.
Currently ! have 196 sets up on the registry which includes 44 player sets and 13 HOF/Team of the Decade etc sets. This excludes 10 sets back from PSA that I have not registered yet. My card room is getting crowded!
I too start the calendar year with a budget based upon last years bonus, stock appreciation or lack thereof and rough estimate of other expenses. I also set a goal of how many sets I want to finish at the beginning of the year and in broad terms where I want to focus given needs, which sets are hot, where I can spend my money most wisely etc.
Problem is by July I am 90% through the budget and to buy cards in the fourth quarter I am making it contingent upon being paid January 1 of next year.
It all sounds great in theory to focus on what sets are not overheated but if that 62T Landrum comes up or a 67T Speedy Duncan or for that matter the last card in any set I need I am likely to be aggressive.

Just added up my stock options + my annual salary + my annual bonus and it came out to 0 + 0 + 0 = 0
You guys are way too competitive. Can't we all just learn to get along and share?
My daily goals are simple : shoot a decent round of golf and wake up the next morning.
My yearly goals are even simpler : try to beat SKINSFAN at fantasy football ...

Yea, I'm still in therapy for letting Art sneak past me at the end last year. Serves me right though ... for letting those Giants and Chargers play on my team.

PS - Hey Fuzz, Did you ever finish all the coke caps sets? I saw a bunch at the Fort and was thinking about you.
Can't possibly believe that I did. I have heaping shoeboxes full of these things waiting to be cleaned and sorted. It was taking so long and I was falling behind so bad that I eventaully just stuffed them away and haven't gotten back yet. What I have learned is that the checklists aren't very helpful. There are a large number of non-documented variations. It seems more like no two are the same. Did I mention the checlkists aren't very helpful. Picked them up for a song and am working on a Master set. Will need more shoeboxes.
Griffins,
This is clearly a joke started by Skinsfan and Wolfbear trying to draw attention away from their own massive holdings. My kids think it is funny but clearly in jest as clearly the two of them, Dav and MOSH are the players to be concerned about.

My method is pretty simple. I'll only start a new set once I'm up to 90% on an existing set. I figured this way it still keeps my interest in the older set looking for that last 10% and upgrades, while "bottom fishing" for the new set offsets the price of overpaying for that last 10%.
Surprisingly, even with all the analysis and budgeting, Jim, Fuzz (and Art's) names are usually ahead of mine when an auction ends.
