Selling on ebay with or without insurance?

The only reason I'd require insurance is to avoid getting ripped off by buyers who falsely claim they didn't receive their merchandise. Am I being too paranoid? On the other hand, insurance does raise the price, and I don't want to discourage bidding, especially for items that will sell for under $20 or so. Making insurance optional is an obvious compromise but you can still get ripped. I'm not sure why some sellers don't offer insurance at all. PayPal isn't an option for me.
I'm interested in feedback from both buyers and sellers. Thanks.

under $50 - delivery confirmation, if they don't pay for it I do.
$50-500 - I pay for insurance, it's cheap and I sold a valuable card. $50 to me isn't a huge amount but to many people it is.
$500+ - registered mail. No exceptions. I work at the post office and I understand the care that is taken with registered mail. It's a great bargain.
For me buying -
I pay for confirmation no matter what and over $50 I want insurance.
Foreign with paypal = absolutely positively signature confirmation by buyer. The only exception I can think of would be Garrett (Knuckles) or another highly regarded member here. I got burned sending a few hundred dollar card to canada. The guy got the NUMBERED card, said he never got it, he charged back the paypal and then re-sold it on ebay (same numbered card) for $100 more than he was supposed to pay. I filed a complaint with paypal and ebay and lost.
Insurance is a lot cheaper than having the buyer say he never got it.
Insurance under $50 does not come with tracking information so make sure it has delivery confirmation also.
Too many scammers out there to not protect yourself.
<< <i>Even with ins. and delivery confirmation you can get hurt. I have to file a claim with the post office next week for a $50 ins. claim. Delivery confirmation shows it was delivered but the forum member says it wasn't. It could have been delivered to the wrong address I guess. This will be a first for me . Can't wait to see how it turns out. >>
They probably won't fight you too hard for a $50 claim. You should have to prove the payment price, just print out the paypal receipt and bring it with you.
If you hadn't spent the $1.35 on insurance they would be telling you they're sorry there's nothing they can do.
Before you go there ask the buyer if he has ever had a lost package before. Most carriers do a great job with parcels, sometimes they just can't do the job and sometimes you get a new guy or a sub and they're hurrying so much to meet standards that they screw up all over the place. If he has had lost packages before you need to get something from him that it happened before and that he notified the postmaster at the receiving office.
They can't fix problems if they don't know about them.
Good luck -
