I hope Albert Pujols Annihilates Bond's Single Season "Record"

At the rate Pujols is going he will hit 100+ Homers this year. Albert might have 40-50 by the All-Star break.

I'm right behind you on that one! We know how much Bonds LOVES that single season HR record. I would like to see someone like Pujols do it. What a well earned honor that would be.

I can hear Bonds now...."But no one would pitch to me....they want Pujols to break it because they don't want a black man holding the record....blah blah blah whine whine whine cry cry cry"

I would like to see Pujols do it for the simple reason that it would be held by a legitimate HR hitter regardless of anything else, including race.

Why? so people like you can just be suspect of HOW he hit all those Hr's and then figure out some reason that he cheated. Just like McGwire in '98 and the 1AD thing, baseball fans will figure out a way to spoil it.

I really think that, even if he hit 62, I believe that it would get treated with tremendous respect. He would be the first one not suspected of any wrongdoing.

74? I will start that talk when (if) he gets past 62.

No doubt, he is off to a great start. I stop what I am doing when he comes up to bat.

Now why is he not suspected of any wrongdoing? Im serious, he is a big guy and very well could have juiced at some point? Im not taking anything away from Albert as I think he is a great player and is a good role model as well, but how do we know for sure?

We don't and can't know "FOR SURE". That is a pretty technical term. We can't know "FOR SURE" that Hank Aaron or Willie Mays or Babe Ruth didn't cheat, but it is HIGHLY unlikely. The chances are almost non existent.

I'm just saying that since they are testing with heavy penalties, it is very unlikely that he did or will cheat.

  • I would have to think that teams will begin to not pitch to Albert in the near future. If not, they are idiots.

I think he might break the most walks in a season record before he breaks the most HR in a season record.
  • I think alot will depend on the numbers Rolen and Edmonds put up the rest of the season. If those 2 cannot get it going to protect him in the lineup, teams will be more likely to pitch around Albert as the season progresses and divisional races heat up.

Put me in the same catagory of fan that would like to see ANYONE replace Bonds as the single season HR leader. A season or career ending injury would make me happy and if Selig's witchhunter can find some proof of cheating I would be ecstatic to see his name and accomplishments expunged from baseball forever.
  • I don't know why Pujols gets a pass either. He is also a big muscular man. Everyone also has to remember that they only test for certain enhancers! They do not test for the designer stuff. Anybody on the good stuff has absolutely no fear of getting caught because of a urine test. The only way they get caught is if somebody close to them snitches. Thats it. I wish for the love of god people would realize this. Same for Bonds. HE could still be doing stuff right now without fear of getting caught by the weak testing policy MLB has.

Heck, even when they do test for the designer stuff, the users are always one step ahead of the testers.

As for the evidence? Physical evidence is pretty telling. A simple body comparison between Aaron and Pujols should lay to rest any fears of Aaron having been on anything(anything that worked at least. The stuff back then wasn't nearly as good). While the body eye test is not 100 percent conclusive, it goes a long way.

I've always suspected Pujols's age was wrong, and how he gets a free pass on enhancers is strange. Of course Bonds and Giambi got that same free pass from most for a while too. Had it not been for the balco debacle, they would still have their strong backers. People get fooled all the time. I wouldn't stake my claim or name on anybody that I don't know as well as a brother. Not sure how Pujols fans can do that.

    skinpinch,

I usually love your posts, but I think you are way off here.

Take a look at this picture. He is a strong guy, but these arms hardly look like someone on an performance enhancers. Why is it that the guy can't JUST BE THIS GOOD.

Why is it that some fat guy that drunk beer all the time can hit 60 homeruns in a season and over 700 for a career, but nobody today can do it without cheating? I for one think that Babe Ruth is a legend and I also think that Bonds cheated. Pujols has been a big guy for a long time.

The guy is just this good, period. Hank Aaron had a beautiful swing with power. Pujols is the same.

Here is the picture. Heck, my arms are that big, and I don't even work out. It's the swing.

  • Frankhardy,

My statement was more directed towards the idea that if a guy doesn't test positive that he is clean(with the poor testing procedure). Bonds himself uses that excuse that he never tested positive for steroids. That is more where I was thinking.

He could be that good. We may never know on a lot of these guys. He is less suspicious than most. It is one screwed up time.

With all the designer stuff available, it is funny how some players do get the automatic NO WAY thinking. We don't even know these people and what they are doing in their free time. Especially guys from other coutries. That was my other point.

That picture lends credence to your point. It also lends credence on my age contention. He looks 35 in that picture. I know he isn't 35, but his age was always a question mark when he came up.

The man can rake, no doubt. Amazing ability and everything. I do hope his lineup stays intact so we don't see an intentional walk fest. I imagine what Bonds' totals would have looked like if the Giants had went after Thome when the Phillies got him. Roids or not, it was still fun to watch. Their GM was soo stupid. They should have poured everything for a guy like that to hit behind Bonds. GM's are often stupid though.

The biggest difference between Albert and Barry, besides the chemical enhancements to Barry, is El Hombre respects the game to the utmost. All Barry worries about is Barry. Period. Pujols goes out of his way to be the hardest worker, spends the most time at the park, and probably studies the most tape of anyone since Gwynn. Aside from all the baseball accomplishments Pujols does tremendous work for charities here in town, with Downs Syndrome being his main focus. He has stated on numerous occassions he has stated he would never be a part in anything that would hurt his, his teams, and his cities reputation. As far as the picture of Pujols goes, that looks like a man with a large natural build, not all the veins popping out of everywhere and body builder muscles that Chemical Bonds displays.
Stan Musial topped the .300 mark 17 times and won seven National League batting titles. A three-time MVP, he played in 24 All-Star Games. Probably, the greatest player who is overlooked and underappreciated.

    Skinpinch,

I understand your point. However, the only thing that might make him look a little older is the hairline. I know PLENTY of guys in their early 20's with thinning hair. Pujols moved to Independence, MO when he was 15 years old. He graduated high school and went to a community college in MO. I know it's possible to forge your age, but I don't think it is likely in his instance.

Plus, the more you read and hear about this guy, the more you realize that he has integrity and character. I know we don't know their private lives, but at least everything we hear about him is positive. From what I have heard and read, I don't think the guy would use drugs, not because he would be scared of getting caught, but just from principle that it would be wrong. Again, this is from what I have read and heard. I don't like putting people on a pedestal just because of their atheletic ablilities. Case in point, Michael Jordan. That man was the best basketball player I have ever seen, but he had (has) some issues like gambling. I still say he is the best basketball player, but as a person, he has some issues that are out in the open. I know we all have our problems, but, from what I have read and hear, Albert Pujols is a great baseball player, but he is even a greater person. I have spoken with his foundation director within the past month. He says, even after all of the money, he and his wife still remain humble. He said that they live in a "normal" house, in a "normal" neighborhood.

I know we can't know for sure, but at least we don't hear about any junk from him. That's all I'm trying to say.

That's really one of the biggest reasons that he is my favorite player. The man can sure hit, but he seems to have integrity.

  • Frank,

Sounds good to me...you have me convinced about him on all points. image

    Skinpinch,

If you have the time, go to Pujols Family Foundation for a little bit of info. It's got some good info. Also, go to the store. I bought a set of game used batting gloves from 2005 that are both autographed. They sold the 10 that they had in less than 24 hrs. They sold the game used hats in less than 24 hrs as well.
