How can you tell if a 2nd chance offer is real or not??? Update its was the real deal!

jabbajabba Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭✭✭
I got one from e-bay today that had my e-bay user name and it had
(Your registered name is included to show this message originated from eBay) on it? It look real but I was not sure so I did NOT click on the link. I loged off my e-mail and loged on my e-bay account and sent the seller a PM on the coin. Boy the e-mail I got sure looks real but for the price it looks to good 2B true.

It should show up in your my ebay page as well as your email account.

A real email has your actual name, not your ebay name, with something along the lines of "(Your registered name is included to show this message originated from eBay)"

You got a spoof, but a good one.

But did it actually have your registered name on it? Not just your eBay handle but also your real name that you used when you registered with eBay, the one on your credit card or bank account that your listed with them? (Assuming you didn't sign up back in the dark ages like I did when they didn't require a credit card or bank account.)

The real ones I get have both.

In the past, I have also got those second chanmce offers too. BUT, it was ONLY after bidding $2000 on certain items, not just coins. Did you bid a large amount? E-bay will notify you in less than 24 hours if it was a spoof, If it was a good price, it was likely a spoof. Especially if they said you have to pay via Western Union, etc instead of Paypal. BE CAREFUL! Ray

  • The BEST way to be sure your second chance offer is the REAL DEAL is to change your settings in ebay preferences. Uncheck the box that says to email you second chance offers. Then they real ones go to your ebay email system and any offers you get through your personal account are FAKES.

That usually does it... the real seller will tell you he did not send any 2nd chancers if it's a spoof.

However, if the spoofer POS and the real seller actually did send a 2nd chancer, it may be hard to tell which one is legit.

I got the exact same E-mail today. A different e-Bay seller, but with the same E-mail address listed in the SCO: ngccoins@yahoo.com
I checked the header and it's a complete fake. I forwarded it to the robots at e-Bay and expect nothing to be done.

I just accept that I lost the auction in the first place and move on. If it is truely a second offer, they will probably put it back up for sale anyway unless someone bites in the offer.

With all due respect Jeremy this isn't always true. I have received bogus yet very convincing looking email that would have fooled anyone because it looked exactly like an authentic eBay message and called me (as you say) by my Name and my buyer's ID.

It was not in my messages and therefore a very brilliant piece of phishing email. Most of us, including myself, would easily have fallen for it.

There are times when I send out second chance offers because I have multiples and the underbidder(s) was/ were like just a few cents short of the winning bid. When I do this I always go to the contact member feature and write to them there so that eBay can witness and then I send the same exact copied and pasted message to them thru conventional email, helping them feel at ease by providing my ID along with my telephone # or just whatever it takes and many times I have had people reply and accept the offer.

It makes sense to do this when you have realized a target price because you don't have to paay to relist, only final value fees.

I hope this helps. image (JMHO)

Well it was real, to bad I droped my money on a 3-leger!

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to eBay with your concerns about the email you
    received.

I can confirm that the message you received was an official email
message sent on behalf of eBay. This message was sent because you
indicated in your preferences that you wished to receive these types of
messages. Remember, if you get an email sent to your registered eBay
email address that looks like it's from eBay about a problem with your
account or requesting personal information, check My Messages first. If
    it's not there, it's a fake email.

To check My Messages, simply click the "My eBay" button at the top of
most eBay pages - you may be asked to sign in. "My Messages" will appear
at the top of the My eBay page.

If you do not wish to receive messages such as these in the future, you
may want to change your notification preferences. In order to view and
update the notification preferences to your account, please follow the
    steps below:

    1. Click the "My eBay" button at the top of any eBay page.
    2. From My eBay, click the "Preferences" link located under the "My
Account" heading in the column on the left side of the page.
    3. Click the "Edit" link under the heading "Notification Preferences" at
the top of the next page. You may be asked to sign in.
    4. On the following page, you will see a list of check boxes. A checked
box means you will receive a notification, and you can click on the
checkbox to turn the notification off.
    5. Once you are finished choosing your preferences, please scroll to the
bottom of the page and click the "Save" button.

Also, to help you better protect yourself from fake eBay and PayPal Web
sites, we have developed a feature for the eBay Toolbar called "Account
Guard." Account Guard includes an indicator that lets you know when you
are on an eBay or PayPal Web site or a known spoof (or "phishing") site.
Account Guard also includes buttons to report fake eBay Web sites, and a
password notification feature that warns you when you may be entering
your eBay password on an unverified site.

To learn more about the eBay Toolbar with Account Guard go to
www.ebay.com, click on "Downloads" at the bottom of the page, and then
click on the "eBay Toolbar" link.

Furthermore, If you are ever concerned about an email you receive from
    eBay, simply follow these steps:

    1. Open a new Web browser and type www.ebay.com into your browser
address field to go directly to the eBay site.
    2. On eBay, sign into your account and click the "My eBay" button at the
    top of the page.
    3. Check the My Messages section located at the top of the My eBay page.
If an email affects your eBay account, it's now in My Messages. Any
email sent to your registered eBay email address from eBay or from
another eBay member via eBay's member-to-member communication system
will now appear in My Messages.

Thank you for being part of the eBay community. I hope this information
    helps.

    Regards,

    Awena

I just got one of those fake ones as well.

The e-mail I got said to contact the seller at such and such e-mail address.

I looked up the old auction and it isn't even the same person.

The odd thing is that Jabba has never said whether or not the second chance offer was in his My eBay. Something still seems very wrong here. The email says the regisered name is included so you will know it is real, but the email DOES NOT include the registered name. Ebay says it is real, but when he contacts the seller who is supposedly offering the second chance, he gets no response. You would think that if the wanted to sell the coin they would have responded.

So how about it Jabba, was the email in your My eBay?
  • jabbajabba Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭✭✭
when I got the 2nd chance offer It only came to my e-mail not "My E-bay" so when there was nothing in there thats when I sent it to e-bay spoof because I thought it was fake. They e-mailed me back saying it was real but the seller never did e-mail me back so I cant trust it.
The odd thing is when they e-mailed me back to tell me it was real they sent a copy to my e-mail and My e-bay. So why did the 2nd chance offer never end up in my e-bay? Do I need to change a setting?
  • fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
The only time I was stung on ebay was with a second chance offer (luckily it only cost me a few bucks for that lesson). I assume they are all a bunch of garbage and delete them no matter how much I may want the item.

No you don't need to change a setting. If the second chance offer had been legit it should have gone through their system and it should have been in My eBay. I'm wondering if the response you got from spoof@eBay.com was smply an automated answer and if they have managed to come up with a way to trick spoof. And spoof is not infallible. Some people in the past have tried forwarding the standard "end of auction" emails to spoof and had them reported back as being fake.
