New Scanner and I like the quality.

I just got a Canon MP830 and this thing is sweet. I had a Canon MultiPass F80 that worked great for 2.5 yrs and crapped out tonight. So I had to buy a new one image

Check out the quality:

    Jordan,
What settings did you use to get that quality scan?

Just the preset. It was 300dpi. The program it came with does not have a function to resize, so I am trying to find a freeware program I can easily crop and edit.

    What did that run you??

$270 and I got the 3 year warranty for $30. The old one I had for just shy of 3 years and had I spent the $30 on that one, I would have gotten this one for free.

I usually don't but it would have helped on the last one. Also, I sell maintenance on IT devices(routers, switches, servers) image. Its a little different because it is the only way Cisco will give you coverage and software updates, but I have a different mind set since I took this job a year ago.

No diatribe needed. I'll read and hopefully learn some tips image.

I don't know about dpi, extended warranties, ground floors or plastics, but that is one great scan. You made an excellent choice on your new hardware.

Zef - outstanding. This is a subject near to my heart, as I use a Lexmark X85, also at 300 dpi. However, the factory setting is 150, and at 300, using it pretty much freezes up the rest of my internet sites to the point where I have to restart everything. I'm using your scan beside mine for my own comparative purposes - thanks!

I think there is no question that yours is far superior. Did you have any kind of image adjustment available on your scan?

It might be superior because the scanner is better, but it's much more likely that it's better because it's 300Kb in size versus 43Kb for the lady in her underwear.
  • zef204zef204 Posts: 4,742 ✭✭
I didn't alter it at all. I cropped it and then resized it. For single slabs I resize it to 400 across and 2 slabs 800.

The scan is lightning quick too.

My last scanner didn't really show any depth. I read on the board a while back that the new scanners were starting to show depth better but until I saw it I didn't realize how much better.

Off the subject, but that is a great American Beauties card. I've always seen them with the toned borders.

Okay, I'm confused. Zef, I don't mean to jack your thread, apologies upfront, but I don't understand the 300kb vs 43kb. Don't scans need to be less than 50kb to be hosted on this site? I edited the size (control W in my editing program) to resize ot 40% of the original scan. Is there some setting on my scanner that I should change to get a better image?

Hosting it on ImageShack doesn't help.
Tom, the borders on this card are snowy white. That's why I hate my scanner, and I can't seem to do anything about it. I may just have to plop down some dough and try another new one.

Hey, I am looking for a do it all printer, scanner, fax, it looks like the one you bought does all of this. Fantastic scan. How does it print? I may buy this exact model. Thanks!

Can you scan a chrome card? My Canon 3000 ex doesn't really do a good job on base chrome cards. They look like lead. Refractors and regular cards looks great, but I've been thinking of switching to something else. I had a great HP scanner for about 6 years but it was so old it won't work with XP.

I don't have to scan those because I don't do anything later than the 80's. I don't even know if I have one here to test out.

Checking out the raw scan. I got a robust photo editing program from an someone on the Open Forum and I also am toying with the functionality of that as well.

Good question ... not 2007 maybe by 2k10 but the Hall is so screwed up I gave up worrying about it ... i just love the complexity of the story. Just added a bunch of cards to my sight, i'm gonna add a bunch more tomorrow too if you want to check them out.

Not to hijack this thread any more than i already have but since it was asked.... you're going to take a serious hit on quality if you go for a multi-function... to compensate you would have to spend a tremendous amount of dough to get a solid product accross the board. Faxing is something you can do entirely through your computer.... i suggest somethign like eFax but there are tons of solutions (and some are even free). My personal scanner cost me under $150 and my personal printer cost me under $250 .... they are top notch for what i do... at work we have some more powerful stuff but that's a whole nother topic... as i would read through scantips.com a little bit and see if that doesn't help you ... if you have any more questions ... feel free to hit me up in an email.

    here's one of my scans...

HIJACKER!!!! I'm just kidding. And you are right with what you said. I have to go for an all in one for space purposes. I don't have enough room in the home office for a scanner & a printer. I also need to accept incoming faxes which even though I may have the ability to scan my faxes, they don't.

So, if you can break it up by device you are likely better off to do so. I am bound by space and the need to have a number that people can fax too, so I sit in a little different boat.

  • I hear ya..... in the spirit of hijacking...let's continue.... as i mentioned ....there are a number of programs out there that allow you to send and recieve faxes without a fax machine....i would suggest efax but if that doesn't suite you feel free to shoot me an email and i'll point you in the direction of some other options :-)

Thanks to this thread, I now own a Canon PIXMA Mp500, which is basically the same scanner Zef bought, minus the fax. It's got a ton of enhancement features that I can't begin to fathom, but I think I'm going to be a lot happier. Saved a hundred bucks, too, by losing the fax.

Here's the test - the one on the left is the earlier I scanned with my old scanner; the one on the right is the new scanner with just a little bit of knowledge on how to adjust.

I just bought this multipurpose gizmo recommended by Zef:

    Canon Pixma mp830

I am too pleased with it (Zef, ask for your cut from Canon). Here is my sample:

    image

Weird thing is is that the scan did not look this good in the program I used; weird. It looks great posted.

    Thanks again Zef!

(By the way, can you believe the Concepcion is only an 8????)

  • zef204zef204 Posts: 4,742 ✭✭

Awesome! I am glad that I suggested it. Those look great guys.

I needed the fax but looked into the 500 and a seperate fax machine, but space wasa factor as well.

I think I'll call canon image

Zef - good thing you didn't get the MP500. Turns out my salesman fed me a crock. Upon closer scrutiny of the MP830 vs the MP500, they are definitely NOT the same scanner. After spending close to a week trying to get the MP500 scanner to give me a sharp, crystal clear scan, I threw up my hands and bought myself an MP830 to check it out. It is so superior, all I can do is show the two scans. Both these scans utilize the factory default settings (and there is no way to make one as good as the other). The left one is the MP500, the one one the right is the MP830. Huge difference:
