Questions about 1965 Mexico Mint Set???

I just picked up a 1965 Mexico Mint Set and I had a few questions about the coins and packaging. First....is the large Mexican Peso Silver.....if not what is it made of?

Second questions surrounds the packaging.......are these known to contain PVC? Without taking the coins out it looks like their is a green tint around the cardboard opening and some green on a few of the coins that I suspect has to be PVC..........

Here are a few picture to asses the condition from (Each image is shot through the plastic which is a bit cloudy with age):

One of the coins has some amazing toning on it that I would like to not remove if possible but if it takes a bath in acetone I am afraid it might come off.....any body else have any experience in that area??? Thanks!!!

The peso is silver, well it is .1000 silver.

Looks like PVC damage to me but I'm not familiar with the packaging.

That sure looks like pvc damage to me as well. To my knowledge acetone doesn't remove toning. I've used it with great results and it hasn't destroyed toning.
And yes the Peso is 10% silver. I'd like to see an "after" (acetone) shot of the set.

These sets are distressingly common but the 1 peso coin is a slightly better date. Gems of
this one are worth holding. The '64 set is far more common yet. The packaging isn't espec-
ially problematical for these coins but like most mint packaging is not adequate for long term
storage. The minor coins are also quite common.

The Mexican 10% silver pesos are grossly undervalued but it's the earlier dates which are
tough in unc and gem. Avoid these as a silver play since the silver is expensive to recover
and I hear tell they are often light.

  • I am soaking them in acetone now with solid results though a few look like they are going to have to soak a while as when I pulled them out and rised them and then patted them dry....they appeared to still have some of the PVC build up on them. The good news is that the toning hasn't budged and out of the package the 20 Centavos is breathtaking!!!!
  • Wow......still soaking and still covered in PVC.......looks like this might take a few weeks. I have never had coins with this much PVC on them but I read on the US coin forum that it can take several week of soaking before all of the PVC is removed. No idea if there is underlying damage but I figure I paid $1.50 for the set and If I can clean up that 20 centavos piece without harming the toning.......even raw it's worth more to me then $1.50 image
